Job Description

Hitachi Rail is looking for an enthusiastic self-motivated Associate Wayside & Onboard Engineer who thrives in a fast-paced environment. The successful candidate is comfortable performing a wide range of tasks from administrative to strategic. The position is based in Perth, Australia.


Key accountabilities:


Reporting to the Team Leader, you will assist with maintenance, troubleshooting, system monitoring, and technical support activities. You will work closely with experienced engineers and technical specialists while gaining exposure to real-world rail signalling operations and maintenance environments.


The successful candidate will be proactive, eager to learn, and capable of working both independently and collaboratively within a team. This role may also involve participation in an on-call roster and occasional site attendance as operational requirements arise.

 

  • Be available to work on an ad-hoc basis with flexible hours and varied tasks.
  • Support Help Desk activities for remote and centralised maintenance operations.
  • Download and analyse system logs, diagnostics, and dump files remotely.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve entry-level network and system faults.
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation, drawings, and records associated with laboratory and operational systems.
  • Assist the Team Leader with internal and client reporting requirements.
  • Perform routine health checks on operational and project-related systems.
  • Participate in team meetings, workshops, training sessions, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Record and communicate technical findings and recommendations to relevant stakeholders.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date technical documentation and troubleshooting procedures.
  • Foster professional and collaborative relationships with team members and stakeholders.
  • Ensure compliance with all Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) policies, procedures, and reporting requirements.

 

Required skills and knowledge:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, electronics engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and within a team environment.
  • Commitment to continuous learning and professional development.
  • Ability to explain technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Internship, vacation work, or practical experience in Electrical, Electronics, Rail Systems, Signalling, Telecommunications, or related fields.
  • 0 - 2 years of experience in system maintenance, technical support, testing, commissioning, or related engineering activities.
  • Understanding of railway signalling, onboard systems, telecommunications, or industrial control systems would be advantageous.
  • Willingness to participate in on-call support activities and occasional site-based work.
