The Sustainability Laboratory (SUSL), is part of Hitachi’s European R&D Centre, located in central London. The SUSL team has a mission to be at the forefront of Hitachi’s activities as we evolve as climate change innovators.

The team creates, analyses, and develops innovations in the energy, environment, and sustainability sectors, leveraging Hitachi’s technologies and customer co-creation. The focus is across the broad European energy (power systems and renewables), environment (carbon mitigation and nature-based solutions), and sustainability (carbon management and circular economy) sectors to enable digital and physical solutions. As part of Hitachi's Global R&D Group, the SUSL team also works and co-creates with other European laboratories covering Automotive, Industry, Data and Service Design, and several innovation research laboratories in Japan and around the globe.

Hitachi were principal partners of COP26 where we demonstrated our global commitment to being climate change innovators. The Sustainability Lab and European R&D centre were a key part of our COP26 activities and technology showcasing.

We have an exciting new opportunity in the SUSL team for a Product Specialist to participate in the design of Hitachi European R&D products and benchmark products helping to translate business requirements and partner and customer feedback into product features and functionality. In this position, you will work closely with both the development team and product manager to define product features that deliver customer value and support product strategy and participate in related research and prioritization of new features and functionality.
 

The successful candidate will need to be highly motivated with a strong techno-economic background, coupled with a demonstrable appetite for creativity, business innovation and application of entrepreneurial experience.

The role will cover a broad understanding of the complex energy, natural and social value chains which need to work in harmony for a balanced and prosperous society. An understanding of and demonstrated abilities in the intersection of the energy, industry, transport, environment, economy and society will be important.

Hitachi’s European R&D Sustainability Lab focuses on assessing and developing new and innovative business opportunities for Hitachi’s technologies. Therefore, a technical background is essential with strong commercial capabilities. An understanding and appreciation of the role of policy, regulation and government bodies is important to understand how technologies and solutions would fit within and engage as part of a wider society and ecosystem.

Projects will typically involve various stages from creation, through development to delivery and reporting. The candidate will be working with both internal and external global stakeholders, therefore experience of in working in diverse teams and demonstrated strong interpersonal skills will be beneficial.


This is a mixed remote position where you’d have to come into the office once or twice a month.


What You’ll Do

  • Market research to help develop the benchmarking product

  • Translate goals and feedback to practical features

  • Work with the software development team to design the product

  • Set up partnerships with business units within the HITACHI family.

  • Represent the company in the industry

  • Support Hitachi Business Units with market investigations and future scenario development of specific issues in the EU market, providing technical and economic input.

What Makes You a Great Fit

  • Experience with smart device performance benchmarking is necessary and proven experience to bring together technical, business, economic, social and environmental factors to a project is essential.

  • Experience in participating in agile software development projects is necessary. Either product management or product design capabilities.

  • Understanding of the UK/European energy markets and carbon offset markets and/or business knowledge of a broad range of the low carbon energy/sustainability markets is required and demonstrable experience is preferred.

  • Understanding of UK and European taxonomy is a plus

  • An ability to work across several concurrent projects with differing levels of maturity and complexity is required.

The following skills and experience are desirable/preferable:

  • Basic knowledge of optimisation algorithms and coding capabilities (preferably Python). This is desirable but not essential.

  • Good communication skills via written material and presentations are essential, and a second spoken language, preferably European and/or Japanese, would be preferable.

  • Strong cultural awareness with the ability to work and interact with people from various continents and cultural backgrounds is preferred.

  • Evidence to demonstrate an enthusiasm and interest to research new domains and technologies, and to master and apply the technologies in practice is preferred.

  • Self-starter with a probing enquiring nature able to work alongside and with other team members is desirable.

  • Experience of eliciting business requirements, conducting market analysis and impact assessments, developing user stories and experience of assessing the social/economic effects of technology and solutions is preferred.
