Hitachi Rail is looking for an enthusiastic self-motivated Associate System Engineer who thrives in a fast-paced environment.  The successful candidate is comfortable performing a wide range of tasks from administrative to strategic. The position is based in San Francisco, CA.

  • Ensure the identification of the project Interfaces among the assigned subsystems and of external interfaces according to the project scope of work
  • Proactively support the system engineering activities by ensuring that project activities are executed in accordance with the design standards
  • Contribute to the identification and management of the System Requirements for the entire lifecycle of the project
  • Support the performance of the System Engineering studies for the project (fleet sizing calculation, Operational Scenario issue) and the performance of System Integration tests (e.g. test procedure and report)
  • Support and develop test cases, test procedures, test scripts and test data as well as document and track defects
  • Perform and participate in integration test activities
  • Support lab, factory, and field testing including reviewing logs and troubleshooting
  • Perform version control management of system releases
  • Follow established department processes and document all work associated with the assigned responsibilities fully and accurately
  • Understand and integrate applicable CMMI, CENELEC, AREMA, IEEE, IPC, etc standards.

Required Skills/Knowledge:

  • 2 to 5 years of Engineering project design and/or test experience
  • Demonstrates the ability to deliver solutions to closure
  • Ability to acquire understanding of new technologies with minimal guidance
  • Simply communicating complex ideas to peers or project supervisors
  • Technical troubleshooting and problem solving abilities
  • Strong prior experience with Microsoft Office suite, scheduling software (MS Project or Primavera), requirements management systems, and software configuration tools
  • Prior experience managing small to medium sized projects and project teams
  • Demonstrated ability to engage cross-functional teams of varying skills/experience
  • Success with multi-tasking across multiple projects at given time
  • Builds effective relationships and has exceptional communication and leadership skills
  • Detail oriented with excellent organizational skills
  • Electrical, Electronic, or Computer Engineering Qualifications/University Degree or Equivalent Technical Background

Desired Skills/Knowledge:

  • Prior experience with engineering project lifecycles, delivery, and HW/SW integration lifecycle
  • Experience working on novel/“first application” systems/solutions
  • Prior experience collaborating with a diverse, cross-functional team across multiple geographic locations
  • Prior rail or rail transit domain experience
  • Prefer experience in any one of the following:
    • Telecoms and Network designs
    • Automated control design and development systems
    • Conventional signaling control designs
    • CBTC (Communication based train control) systems and designs
    • PTC (Positive train control) systems and designs


  • Bachelor’s Degree


  • English-Proficient

The salary range for this position is $85,200- $127,200 per year.  The final pay is determined by the candidate’s experience, skillset and ability level, internal equity and location.
