Hitachi America’s Research and Development organization is looking for an Operations Research Scientist with expertise in optimization and statistics to join the Big Data Analytics Solutions Lab team. The person in this role will develop custom optimization solutions for several industrial and supply chain design and execution challenges. This requires the capability to analyze problems in complex operations settings and model an ecosystem view rather than solving the point problem. This is a technical position for someone who will collaborate with researchers, designers, and engineers of multiple disciplines across Hitachi group companies in the USA and Japan to develop advanced data analytics solutions for various industries.


  • Design and develop algorithms and solutions using Operations Research, Machine Learning, and Big Data Analytics to solve industrial problems.
  • Develop modeling and simulation for various supply chain network scenarios to optimize business outcome and de-risk operational disruptions.
  • Determine data requirements. Gather, understand, clean, and process data for modeling purposes.
  • Keep up to date with advances in operations research, game theory, and behavioral economics.
  • Support and drive customer engagements focused on advanced analytics in diverse domains such as energy, transportation, and manufacturing.
  • Disseminate project progress and results through written reports and oral presentations.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Ph.D. or master's degree from an accredited college/university in in Statistics, operations research, applied mathematics, or related field with the focus on optimization courses.
  • At least 3 years of professional working experience in applying machine learning, mathematical optimization, and other analytic techniques to solve business problems.
  • Experience in writing optimization models using Python (preferred) or R.
  • Experience with agent-based modeling and simulation tools, commercial optimizers, and distributed computing platforms such as Spark, Ray, MPI desirable.
  • Knowledge of behavioral economics and game theory desirable.
  • Experience with demand forecasting and statistical analysis techniques like survival analysis desirable.
  • Fast learner and ability to understand the different application domains and abstract the problem set. Ability to clarify the research view and the business view of the problem set.
  • Self-starter and able to work on multiple projects.
  • Team player with the ability to communicate with a wide variety of audiences. Interest in collaborating and exploring other domains.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills. Comfortable in explaining a technical topic to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Strong record of past publications desirable.
