Production Engineer Intern

Job Description:

Production engineering co-op/interns at Hitachi Astemo will have the opportunity to work with advanced technologies such as robotics, machine vision, lasers, welding, pneumatics, hydraulics, motors, conveyors, servos, PLCs (Programmable Logic Controller), databases, SMT, Chip mounters, AOI (Automated Optical Inspection), detail test stands, and more. This job provides an approximately 50/50 mix of office and hands-on work and has a broad overlap with many fields of engineering such as mechanical, electrical, chemical, and industrial engineering.

Typical Projects/Responsibilities:

New Product Launch:

  • Estimate cost of production equipment and labor (Standard Time) for potential new business.
  • Assist with the design, specification, purchase, and set-up of new equipment and processes.
  • Collaborate with CFT (cross functional team) on the specifications of component parts and packaging to ensure manufacturability on the line.
  • Design and complete experiments and/or trials to decide settings and validate new equipment and processes.
  • Support development of process documentation (PFMEA, Control Plan, etc.).
  • Set up spare parts, preventative/predictive maintenance, work instructions, manuals, and drawings.

Existing Product Lines:

  • Problem Solving: Take a structured approach (I.e., 8-step, 5-why) to figure out true root cause, then design and implement permanent solutions and countermeasures to problems.
  • Monitor production processes’ KPI (Key Performance Indicators).
  • Recognize improvement opportunities and proactively design and implement them.
  • Apply Lean Manufacturing principles to reduce waste and increase productivity.
  • Perform PLC and other programming to modify sequences, add quality checks, or make other improvements.
  • Provide hands-on support to maintenance dept. to repair and troubleshoot.
  • Support the maintenance of process documentation (PFMEA, Control Plan, etc.).
  • NOTE: Other duties may or may not apply depending on the requirements of the specific position, strengths of the individual, and the company's needs.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Be actively progressing toward a degree in engineering or relevant technical field.
  • Be willing to learn and work with electrical systems, pneumatics, controls, mechanics, coding/programming, and/or common assembly and test processes.
