Principal Project Engineer

The purpose of the position is to manage the day-to-day activities of the Project Engineer

Position Location: Brisbane/Perth/Sydney, Australia

Position type: Full time

Reporting relationship: Position reports to the Head of Project Engineering Australia

About the position: Hitachi Rail within Australia have a significant order book for the delivery and ongoing maintenance and improvement of ETCS based signaling system. In addition, we are bidding on many opportunities within the Australian Rail sector across the entire country encompassing both CBTC and ETCS rail signaling systems and associated infrastructure.

We are seeking to expand our team with experienced personnel who will form a key part of our capability to support our ongoing works alongside our emerging opportunities.

What are we looking for: The suitable candidate will have strong experience in project engineering / engineering management in rail systems and signalling, along with experience in real-time system engineering, testing and integration activities, software verification and validation best practices and safety critical techniques. Experience in CBTC projects (within rail signalling) and delivery of projects into a brownfield environment is also required. Highly desirable skills include delivering systems such as ETCS and ERTMS. 

Key responsibilities:

The accountabilities of the Principal/Senior Project Engineer will include but are not limited to:

  • Engineering management and delivery
  • Coordination and liaison with the Project Manager, system and subsystem design teams
  • Planning of engineering activities in conjunction with system and subsystem design teams
  • Engineering change management
  • Design management
  • Design review
  • Engineering risk reviews
  • Engineering status reporting
  • Technical approvals
  • Configuration management
  • Systems engineering
  • Lifecycle management
  • Ensuring all activities undertaken are conducted with due regard to a high level of continuous improvement
  • Ensuring all activities undertaken are conducted with due regard to a high level of safety

Key Experiences preferred:

The candidate of choice should bring 10 to 15+ years of hands-on experience in the rail industry including:

  • Proven track record delivering complex and international projects +$100 million, in Systems Delivery
  • Significant commercial experience (5+ years) working in complex, multi-discipline engineering projects including phases of design, procurement, construction, commissioning. Ideally within the rail industry.
  • A degree in engineering or equivalent.
  • .
  • Highly motivated, with excellent leadership, organisational, communication and people skills.
  • Agile mindset, able to take prompt decisions in a fast paced environment.
  • Ability to work and lead in a multicultural environment.
  • Microsoft Office proficiency.
  • Experience in the following areas of project management: Customer management, scheduling, planning, critical path analysis, change management, risk management, cost estimation

Key qualifications preferred:

  • Degree in Engineering or Computer Science with background in Systems Engineering.
  • 10 + years experience in a project engineering/engineering management role, having this experience in rail, systems and signalling;
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a diverse cultural organization with multiple key stakeholders displaying highly polished interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Experience in effective resource management and working with a large multi-cultural team;
  • Strong working relationships with technology providers;
  • Experience in real-time system engineering; testing and integration activities, software verification and validation best practices and safety critical techniques;
  • Estimating and negotiations.
