We are looking for master thesis worker on, what scenarios are feasible for the offshore DC grid? From this there can be listed some interesting starting questions as: What are the most suitable system layouts for the MTDC grid? And simultaneously, what are the possible existing onshore receiving points to be used and from that the reinforcement needs? Giving answers to these starting questions will provide more insights of the needs for example DC-DC converters, the needs for Power Flow controllers if the MTDC system will have meshed loops, and it can provide some insights in energy storage needs.

Requirement:

  • You will be investigating are feasible graphs/layouts connected with power flow analysis.
  • You will be working on simulations models can be built for quasi-static power flow analysis.
  • This means applying power setpoints to evaluate the flows in quasi stationary manner, mainly in case of meshed loops to identify the locations and needs for power flow controllers.
  • In fact, the start is a real practical approach to try to map the current AC onshore connection points with suitable wind sites and derive from there suitable layouts using e.g. graph theory.
  • Further possible usage of our tools to model high level x-border interconnection capacity needs can be used.

Background:

  • We are looking for Master of Science student who wants to perform thesis work industry with knowledge of Load flow analysis, and graph theory is beneficial.
  • Develop plausible offshore Multi-terminal HVDC grid layout scenarios and identify in these the possible needs for DC-DC power conversion as Power Flow Controllers.
  • The MSc thesis work can be carried out at Hitachi Energy Research in Vasteras, Sweden, or remote or hybrid.
  • The proposed thesis period is about 5 months, with a proposed start in 2023.
  • The time can be adjusted according to the study program.
