About the PhD thesis project :

In recent years, EMBs have drawn significant attention from both research communities and automotive brake suppliers alike, as they are deemed to be a promising replacement for hydraulic brakes in the automotive industry. However, the different nature of the actuator dynamics renders traditional ABS regulation logics unsuitable for future braking systems. The main goal of this thesis is to address the adaptation of ABS algorithms to EMB actuators, considering both disc and drum brakes. The approach proposed in this thesis is based on the regulation of the angular acceleration of the wheels. It also aims at considering the specificities of certain sensors and actuators, which induce additional constraints in the design of the braking system.

Key responsibilities and activities :

Over a 36-month period you will conduct the following research activities:

Review the state of the art on ABS control algorithms for electromechanical brakes

Study the stability of drum brakes from a perspective of control theory

Study the braking distribution and its link with the lateral stability of a vehicle

Development of simulation models of electromechanical braking systems

Optimization of control algorithms for the regulation of wheel angular acceleration

Design of ABS control algorithms adapted to electromechanical brake actuators

Design of observers (Kalman filter) based on incremental encoder timestamping

Coordination of testing activities (validation of the algorithms designed during the thesis on a test bench and a prototype vehicle)

Synthesis and publication of the research results in various forms, including peer-reviewed journals and conferences and patent applications

Writing of a PhD dissertation and oral defense of the thesis (Université Paris-Saclay)

Compliance with the graduate school requirements for the obtention of the doctoral degree (ED STIC)
