What you’ll be doing
In further development of its Global IP Function, the Hitachi Group has created a key role for a senior-level Intellectual Property Counsel to be based in Europe in either the EU (preferably Brussels, Belgium) or London, UK areas to support Hitachi operations in Europe.
This new position will afford the right candidate the opportunity to participate in an exciting period of growth for the company through IP leadership and support in the globalization of the Company’s activities in particular in the area of Social Innovation. This role is foundational to the advancement of Hitachi IP in the region and globally as an important partner and contributor to the growth of the Hitachi Group.
Reporting directly to the CIPO and working closely European businesses (including Hitachi EU, Europe R&D, Rail, Energy) and commercial legal groups, the ideal candidate must have experience in client counseling in IP matters within the EMEA span.
In collaboration with other Group IP Departments, primary responsibilities of this role are directed to developing the IP Counsel function through business engagement, and further developing the global IP function, including by defining Group IP Policy and Standards.
This role reports to Hitachi’s Chief IP Officer
What you bring to the team
We’re looking for a team player, who is independent minded motivated by delivering great work and the Hitachi vision.
The candidate must feel comfortable in taking an active role in engaging the various businesses to provide legal advice in a technology setting, in particular in software. Domain knowledge in the areas of trademarks and internet presence is also helpful.
This role will include among other things:
collaborating in a cross-functional setting to achieve defined objectives to provide and expand IP support including working with the Group Legal Departments, R&D and Business Functions;
advising on IP matters in business (situational and transactional) and litigation/pre-litigation contexts;
advising on, drafting, negotiating and managing IP specific agreements including licenses, third party technology developments, and non-disclosure agreements;
management of outside attorneys for IP matters;
providing other assistance and support to the supported businesses, R&D and Legal department as requested;
advising on IP aspects of M&A deals;
contributing to developing Global IP Strategy including policies and procedures.
Qualifications/Requirements:
EU (any member country) or UK qualified lawyer.
Minimum of 10 years of experience in the legal field of intellectual property in a multi-national setting, including transactional matters (licensing, contracts,) enforcement of IP rights and managing contested matters including litigation and pre-litigation advice.
Thorough expert knowledge of IP laws, rules, regulations and practice under UK, EU norms and familiarity with the relevant counterpart systems (e.g., US).
Proven ability to quickly identify, prioritize and analyze issues, to create solutions, to communicate in a counseling role, and to work effectively and team with all levels of management and members of the IP and legal departments.
Strong ability to be a counsellor to the group businesses through clear communication skills- written and oral.
Demonstrated ability to work with and manage outside counsels.
Experience working in a global IP environment.
Fluency in English required, with strong command of another European language a plus.
