Job Summary:

Drive Unit (DU) is a combination of traction motor, inverter, gearbox, and many more components (on-board charger, DCDC, V2X, etc), for electrified powertrain. As a member of the Hitachi xEV DU Design Engineering, the primary responsibility of this position is to plan, design, test, and coordinate product development of drive unit for electrified vehicles.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Design and development of xEV DU and component.
  • Participate with Hitachi global Design Engineering organizations in product design, development, validation, production launch, and other activities of xEV drive unit for automotive powertrain applications.
  • Create and maintain component and assembly 3-D CAD models, along with related manufacturing drawings and technical specs. 
  • Work side by side with cross functional teams in DU development program.
  • Facilitate accurate & timely program technical communication between outside parties (i.e., OEM customers or suppliers) and Hitachi internal cross function teams.
  • Provide as needed on-site support to internal manufacturing sites and suppliers’ plants for various engineering duties during development and mass production timing.
  • Support various types of product pricing, quoting, and cost investigation activities.
  • Analyze and present various types of technical data / information documents using industry standard PC based software programs (i.e., MS office, Solidworks, ANSYS, etc.)

Qualifications:

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Understand DU system specifications and sensitivities.
  • Understand function and key failure mode of powertrain systems.
  • Ability to use various PC programs (including Microsoft Office) to create / modify / present various types of data & information.
  • Demonstrate fluent English communication, strong initiative / motivation, and problem-solving skills.
  • Support travel as needed to both domestic and international locations.

Education: Possess Bachelor’s degree in Engineering

Experience: Have minimum of 3 years practical experience of drive unit design or geartrain design.

The following are not “must-have”, but considered a plus. Please highlight if you have:

  • Experience in gear tribology modelling, lubrication modelling, contact analysis with analytical and numerical tool.
  • Understanding of bearing failure modes, lubrication and tribology
  • Experience with instrumentation, measurement, calibration, and laboratory testing
  • Experience interfacing with suppliers / customers.
  • Experience with system and/or data analysis software (e.g., MATLAB, Simulink, MiniTab, Python, etc.)
  • Experience with leading development program and/or organized team.
  • Second language proficiency. Japanese preferred.

Working conditions:

Physical Demands: Required to sit or stand for long periods of time. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. Carrying equipment up and down stairs.  Occasional overtime will be required.

Travel: Some domestic and international travel may be required up to 20%. Must have a valid driver’s license.
