Description

Mission statement:

You will be working within HVDC valve development team (UVM) as thesis worker, in bolted joints and flexible conductors are commonly used in converter valve application. Under steady state operation (with constant current), it is relatively straightforward to understand their physics. However, when short-circuit current (a few hundred kA within a few µs) goes through this connection, arcing, electromagnetic force (Lorenz force & Holm force) and "whiplashing effect" which is assumed to amplify the forces causes a significant amount of stress to the joints. Due to complexity of the instantaneous Multiphysics phenomena, hundreds of testing campaigns with the real product have been the only method for mechanical design evaluation. Iteration of the testing is expensive, and relying only on testing leaves no room for minor modifications for improving the design. To be more effective in product development with less testing effort but of course with certainty for the success, there is a strong wish within the team to develop knowledge and a simulation method to capture these physics. Your assignment will be to establish a simulation approach to capture electromagnetic force and "whiplashing effect", to quantitatively represent what we observe from tests.

Your responsibilities:

  • You will be involved in literature study.
  • You will do material analysis from part used in the previous short-circuit tests.
  • You will simplify the problem from a specific application to generalized model.
  • You will set-up a simulation model (Create a 3D model and select a simulation tool and parameters).
  • You will do evaluation of the simulation. (If possible, conduct cross-validation from the previous or on-going testing.)
  • As thesis worker, you summarize the report.
  • Living Hitachi Energy’s core values of safety and integrity, which means taking responsibility for your own actions while caring for your colleagues and the business.

Your background:

  • To be successful for this role, it is assumed that you have a solid background in engineering physics or applied mechanics, or similar, with some course experience in FEM.
  • You are open minded and driven.
  • Interest to create 3D model, simulation tool and parameters or other similar topics.
  • You are expected to establish a simulation method/procedure to complement the testing as result.
