HITACHI RAIL is looking for an enthusiastic self-motivated Project Engineer to work in Pittsburgh, PA. This position is for a roving employee who will work in unanticipated locations throughout the United States. The employee will have to relocate, but travel is not required from any particular location.


The Project Engineer will be required to perform the following duties:

(1) define Concept of Operations for the project including identifying operational scenarios and use cases;

(2) define system architecture for the project (logical, functional, and physical architectures);

(3) lead scope/requirement discussions with technical teams and customer;

(4) lead System Requirements effort and maintain the Requirements Traceability Matrix (RTM);

(5) decompose system requirements to lower-level elements and work with the engineering teams to ensure proper allocation;

(6) serve as the project’s cross-functional technical interface between product development, engineering, manufacturing, verification & validation, commissioning, and RAMS teams;

(7) identify, define, control and manage system interfaces;

(8) acquire deep understanding of subsystems provided by external suppliers and ensure compatibility at system level;

(9) support the project management team in all technology-related decisions;

(10) participate in the overall project technical solution optimization;

(11) support customer design review and internal design reviews;

(12) support lab, factory, and field testing;

(13) contribute to the definition and execution of T&C activities (e.g. interfacing with other technology unit involved in the project);

(14) define impact analysis for proposed changes to the system and support system configuration management through the whole lifecycle;

(15) ensure compliance with company processes;

(16) support external stakeholders (customers, users and tenders) and participate in budget estimation;

(17) integration of the onboard, central and wayside signaling system;

(18) integration of systems, i.e., Fire Detection, Passenger Information, Surveillance, Access Control, Platform Screen Gate, Passenger Vehicle, Trackwork, and Maintenance of Way;

(19) interface with civil partner and identify all technical issues that will impact the project schedule;

(20) System Service Availability calculator development and related data analysis and troubleshooting before entering in revenue service;

(21) monitor document submission in terms of timeliness, quality, and budget in accordance with the contract and excluding RAMS; and

(22) ensure the gathering, checking and authorization of the TCR and the authorized technical change and variation order are traced and implemented inside design activities and included in the technology project cost revision.

Required Skills/ Knowledge 

Must have experience with:

(1) managing external stakeholders such as Civil Partners/External Contractors/Suppliers with high level knowledge of the turnkey Distance to Go Systems;

(2) engineering lifecycles, HW/SW integration lifecycles, and delivering solutions to closure;

(3) Project Lifecycle Management systems (PLM);

(4) activating at least one turnkey driverless project system; and

(5) managing tasking of cross-functional teams of varying skills/experience.


(1) Position requires a Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, or Electrical Engineering

(2) Position requires one (1) year of experience in a Systems Engineer position in the railway industry
