HITACHI RAIL is looking for an enthusiastic self-motived Senior Field Application Engineer who thrives in a fast-paced environment. The successful candidate is comfortable performing a wide range of tasks from administrative to strategic. This position is a REMOTE position (however, candidates preferred in the NY/NJ area).
Hitachi Rail Field Application Engineers are responsible for providing application level technical expertise and knowledge on an extensive array of Hitachi Rail products and solutions to support both the external end customer and internal cross functional departments including Product Development Engineering, Product Management, Portfolio, Sales & Business Development, Marketing, and others. Hitachi Rail manufactures a vast array of products across multiple disciplines including electronic, electrical, electro-mechanical, mechanical, digital, software, etc. for the Railway Signaling & Communications Industry. This is a unique role that requires not only technical expertise, but also strong interpersonal and relationship development skills, customer-facing experience, business astuteness, self-motivation and a self-directed personal drive.
Roles and responsibilities:
• Provide the highest-level technical assistance, engineering support, product information, recommendations, field/site survey support, installation support, troubleshooting, customer training, technical advice, subject matter expertise, demonstrations, and presentations to promote Hitachi Rail technologies and products that meet the client’s needs.
• Primary engineering/technical resource for assigned customers and a shared resource for all customers.
• Grows the customer relationship into a solidified partnership by understanding and acting proactively on all real and perceived customer needs.
• Ability to share responsibility for after-hour emergency support on a rotating basis, currently 1 week on and 3 weeks off. This is in addition to your normally scheduled work week.
• Thorough understanding of Railway Signal Engineering.
• Ability to methodically understand hardware electrical circuit plans to apply and troubleshoot products for customers.
• Supports customers through problem solving and troubleshooting of Hitachi's products and their associated applications.
• Provide engineering leadership and support during equipment outages, customer issue escalations, root cause analyses, customer technical projects, and customer meetings.
• Raises awareness, gathers data, leads actions, and tracks progress of customers technical issues relating to Hitachi's products and solutions for eventual entry into the customer response system for initiation and tracking of solution.
• Provide recommendations internally for new product features for existing products and new product ideas to meet customers’ current and anticipated needs.
• Create, manage, maintain, and implement customer specific specifications to apply products and solutions accordingly.
• Review and contribute to product documents, service manuals, notices to ensure proper technical content.
• Creates, maintains, and delivers technical material including presentations, engineering notes, application bulletins, user guides, white papers and demonstration media on Hitachi’s products and solutions.
• Provide the sales team with the necessary technical support for existing and new product launches and promotions to meet their sales objectives.
• Aid the Product Development Engineering team with firsthand knowledge of properly applying products and solutions that meet the customers’ requirements.
• Contributes to Product Development and Portfolio during requirements gathering phases and new idea generation of new products giving insights on how products are applied in the field and that the customer viewpoint has a voice.
• Setup, Test, troubleshoot, report, and monitor new and existing products for Internal and External engineering teams during the piloting phase to support sales opportunities.
• Ability to create and maintain typical application hardware circuits incorporating Hitachi's products.
• Ability to create, modify and maintain wayside signaling application logic programs for the customer.
• Analyze application software error/information logs to advise solutions to assist the customers in returning their equipment back to revenue service.
• Skilled knowledge in communication systems (Ethernet, Serial, Networking, Modems, Switches, etc.).
• Ability to work in a team and be a contributor to the Field Application Engineering group. This team works closely together and shares each one’s expertise to further other members’ breadth and competencies.
Required skills/experience:
• Minimum of ten (10) years' experience in an engineering/technical role (Railway Signaling industry preferred).
• Technical knowledge in railroad/railway wayside signaling, crossings, PTC (Positive Train Control), CBTC, and communication experience.
• Programmable Logic Controller programming experience (preferably railway wayside vital logic controllers).
• Excellent presentation, written, verbal, and collaborative communication skills.
• Previous experience interfacing directly with the customer.
• Experience with a wide variety of Railway Signaling related products such as: AF Track Circuits, PF Track Circuits, Coded Track Circuits, Phase Selective Units (PSUs), TRU-III, Wayside Interlocking Controllers, WIU’s, Transformers, Signals, Carborne Controllers, Cab Signaling, Switch Machines, Switch Machine Controllers SML/SMC, AFO Electronics, Vital Relays, Electronic Relays, Highway Crossing Controllers, Gate Mechanisms.

Working locations:
• NY/NJ area main territory (Amtrak, NYCT, LIRR, MTA, etc.). Needs to be reasonably located to these customers.
• Works remote when not in field.
• Must have a valid driver’s license and ability to obtain a passport for travel.
• Ability to lift 35 pounds from time to time.
• Up to 50% North American travel, with limited international travel.
• Will work outside of normal business hours when required. Covers many time zones across NA and emergency support across RR’s.
• Ability to work within a flexible work schedule and on occasion to be at a customer’s site in short notice.
Education:
BS Degree in an Engineering discipline (Electrical/Electronic/Computer Engineering preferred) or significant applicable professional experience may be considered.

The salary range for this position is $120-130,000.
Final pay is determined by the candidate’s experience, skillset and ability level, internal equity and location.
