We are looking for an Intermediate Hardware Product Designer to join our team in Toronto!

As an integral part of the Hardware Engineering department, work closely with the Product HSE/ECO Design Manager in analyzing and reporting on product compliance to the latest environmental legislation. The position also involves staying current with new and proposed legislation and to analyze the potential impact on the company deliverable hardware.

Additional activities will be to support the evaluation and implementation of new processes and tools used to analyze and demonstrate compliance. As part of a multinational organization, you will also be involved in sharing and leveraging knowledge, best practices, identification and resolution of Product HSE/ECO Design challenges and to understand and plan for how future objectives and targets will be achieved and demonstrated.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Work with the HSE/ECO Design Manager (Manager) to implement, train staff and maintain tools and processes used to demonstrate compliance to current legislative requirements pertaining to REACH, RoHS and other legislation pertaining to substance
  • Plan, develop, implement and work with staff across multiple departments to achieve department and corporate Product HSE/ECO Design objectives
  • Understand the implementation of new Engineering tools to improve efficiencies in being able to demonstrate compliance to HSE/ECO Design requirements and objectives
  • Work with key stake holders across the engineering teams to ensure reliability of solutions addressing HSE/ECO Design requirements/objectives are well understood through research, evaluation and testing
  • Ensure that new solutions addressing Product HSE/ECO Design requirements are cost effective by working with Engineering, Procurement, Suppliers and other applicable stakeholders
  • Generate and publish metrics to track the progress to meet Product HSE/ECO Design objectives
  • Stay current with existing and emerging HSE legislation impacting Products in how they are developed, deployed and recycled at the end of their useful life
  • Work with the HSE/ECO Design manager to evaluate, select and develop supporting resources in the overall management of Product HSE/ECO Design activities
  • Work with different departments like Procurement to obtain information required to report on substances
Skills and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree, technical diploma, or equivalent, in Electrical/Electronic or Mechtronics Engineering
  • Must have 3-5 years' experience in an electronics engineering environment with a focus on research and analysis
  • Technical competence in Electrical/Electronic/Electromechanical (EEE) parts is important
  • Able to perform detailed research studies on substance legislation to identify potential exposures and risks to which the company will need to identify, address and report
  • Able to gather, compile and analyze data using Hitachi tools and systems to analyze hardware risks and compliance to environmental legislative requirements in assessing and recommending alternate hardware solutions at the component level to address environmental risks and non-compliance
  • Current knowledge of RoHS, REACh, and an awareness of other international environmental standards and regulations related to electronic components and assemblies is critical
  • Good communication skills, both written and oral, is a must
  • Confident in defending technical arguments
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Excel
Preferred Skills and Experience:
  • Experience associated with understanding and demonstrating environmental compliance to legislation associated with restricted and substances of concern
  • Computer and networking equipment familiarity is a plus to support obsolescence management of COTS
  • Experience with 3rd party component databases, such as IHS
  • SAP experience
  • Familiarity with PLM systems like Windchill
