Job Summary:  

The Industrial Applications Engineer (IAE) helps PCI adapt products and capabilities to customer applications in the industrial sector.  The IAE works with customers identified by the Industrial Sales Manager, understanding their technical requirements, explaining the capabilities of PCI, and helping to draft and confirm customer required specifications.  The IAE will travel 33-50% of the time and would be based at PCI Headquarters located in Montgomeryville, PA or a home-based office in the Mid-Atlantic area for the other times.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:  

The Industrial Application Engineer (IAE) serves as the primary technical interface between PCI’s motion control customers and PCI’s engineering staff as a key member of the selling team.  The Industrial Application Engineer uses his or her expertise in motion control to solve customer motor control challenges, which requires strong cross domain knowledge in the areas of kinematics, various motor types, feedback mechanisms, and a range of fieldbuses and communication protocols. The IAE uses his or her knowledge of PCI products and technologies to configure technically and financially viable solutions for customer applications and assist in selling those solutions. The Industrial Application Engineer also provides post-sales technical support including product installation, training and troubleshooting.


1.   Understands Customer Specifications – 30%

1.1   Helps define and document customer application requirements

1.2   Presents PCI capabilities and solutions to potential customers in response to stated or observed needs

1.3   Contributes as a member of the selling team in setting and implementing sales strategies


2.   Works with Engineering to create solutions – 30%

2.1   Works with Engineering to create viable technical solutions using standard and custom PCI products

2.2   Provides customers’ perspective to the design team and becomes familiar with product operation

2.3   Assists in the preparation of costing, margin and pricing analyses


3.   Provides post-sale technical support to customers -30%

3.1   Provides installation support, training, and troubleshooting

3.2   Supports development of User Manuals with content on set-up, operation and troubleshooting

3.3   Provides support via phone, email or (as necessary) Face-to-face (F2F)


4.   Administrative responsibilities – 10%

4.1   Travel planning, expense reporting

4.2   Preparing and submitting customer visit reports

4.3 Updating


5.  Safety Responsibilities

·         Support safety goals established by the Company

·         Follow all safety rules

·         Complete all required safety training

·         Participate in monthly safety inspection program as required

·         Cooperate with any safety inspections that are performed

·         Report unsafe working conditions to supervisor or safety committee

·         Wear required PPE

·         Use, store, and maintain tools and equipment properly

·         Report all incidents/accidents, no matter how minor  they may seem

·         Comply with all  current local, state, and federal environmental regulations

·         Maintain a clean, safe work area in compliance with company and OSHA standards



5.  Performs other duties or special projects as required or as assigned by a supervisor – 10%

Educational/Training/Certification Requirement:

·         BS Electrical Engineering



·         Minimum 3-5 years’ experience with motion control applications

·         Experience with PWM amplifiers and other types of motor drives

·         Demonstrated track record effectively building relationships with (external) customers and internal sales and engineering colleagues


Preferred Education and Experience:

·         Business degree desirable but not required

·         Project Management experience helpful but not required



·         Valid State Driver’s License



Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Characteristics


A.       Knowledge:

·         Familiarity with motion control, motors, feedback devices and automation applications.

  • Familiarity with fieldbuses Including CAN and EtherCAT
  • Knowledge of high power PWM amplifiers and non-motor related applications is a plus. 


B.      Skills:                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                 

·         Strong, concise written and verbal communication skills

·         Proficiency with MS Office tools

·         Project management; proficiency with Microsoft Project is strongly desired


C.       Abilities:                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    

·         Ability to travel independently, by land and air, domestically and internationally

·         Ability to plan and execute travel schedule, including coordinating customer visits, transportation, and lodging

·         Self-starter who can work without close supervision
