Your new role

As an Assistant Project Manager you’ll be joining us to support our East Midlands Rail project. You’ll be working across functions and with external stakeholders! This role would be an excellent opportunity for an experience cross functional Assistant Project Manager or a Project Manager who has focused on activities in one function, but is now looking to work on larger more complex projects.

In this exciting new role you will be responsible for supporting the Project Manager in leading the project delivery team in the execution of all Hitachi Rail Ltd obligations in regards to the allocated Manufacturing & Supply Agreement (MSA).

Specifically, you will be responsible for the following deliverables:

  • Represent HRL matters related to the execution of the allocated MSA, with all Hitachi Rail and external stakeholders as assigned by the Project Manager
  • Management of assigned areas of project delivery programme and resolution of associated schedule conflicts

  • Development of budgets for assigned areas of responsibility with project delivery leads, ongoing budget ownership and management, and reporting

  • Active identification and management of risks to project delivery programme, scope and costs

  • Active management of changes to project delivery programme, scope and costs

  • Management and escalation of key issues affecting assigned areas of responsibility in relation to the project delivery programme

  • Support to the implementation and deployment of required process and procedures in accordance with direction from the UK Project Management Office

  • Support the management of the handover process between rolling stock supply and maintenance teams

  • Support projects department planning through active forecasting and management of project resource requirements for assigned areas of responsibility

About you

  • Previous project management experience in either rolling stock or a similar manufacturing or engineering environment
  • Experience of managing budgets and costs

  • Strong problem solving and conflict resolution skills

  • Good knowledge of Excel and other Microsoft office packages

  • Flexibility in regards to domestic and international travel

  • Demonstrable experience of interfacing with customers, stakeholders and sub suppliers at operating level

  • The ability to work on own initiative, setting clear targets and deliverables

  • A self-starter willing to take responsibility for delivery of goals and objectives

  • Proven ability to co-ordinate operational or project teams, and drive them to an integrated delivery plan

  • Highly motivated and can work with minimum supervision

  • Excellent communication skills 

  • Demonstrates perseverance, patience and commitment for long term success

  • Enjoys challenges and problem solving
