Your new role


Hitachi Rail are looking for talented a Maintenance Technician to join our Train Maintenance Centre in Ashford. This is a permanent role working on a rotating day and night shift basis.


We are looking for a dedicated and talented individual to perform maintenance activities on Hitachi rolling stock. In this exciting role you will be working in a dynamic work environment that values collaboration, adaptability and creativity.


Specifically, you will be responsible for the following deliverables:

  • Maintain the condition of the work site, materials and equipment

  • Adhere to health, safety, environmental & quality practices in the workplace

  • Prepare for and undertake planned and some unplanned defect maintenance on Hitachi rolling stock assets

  • Confirm that traction and rolling stock assets comply with operational specifications by the use of  engineering processes and techniques

  • Prepare for and undertake the removal and replacement of traction and rolling stock components

  • Modify or manufacture traction and rolling stock components by material removal using hand tools

  • Assemble traction and rolling stock components using engineering processes and techniques

  • Install new traction and rolling stock components using engineering processes and techniques

  • Identify, assess and rectify defects and discrepancies on Hitachi rolling stock assets

  • Carryout repairs to traction and rolling stock following technical scopes of work.

  • Provide operational support to users of Hitachi rolling stock assets

  • Assist with operational problems as they arise.
  • Keep Equinox record system up to date with clear and concise information of work carried out.

  • Support good house-keeping and waste management initiatives

  • Develop professionally and support good working relationships


  • Served apprenticeship with mechanical, electrical disciplines

  • Engineering based NVQ level 3 or equivalent.
  • Outstanding safety awareness gained in an operational railway engineering environments.

  • Engineering servicing and maintenance experience.
  • Modern fault finding and repair techniques using PC based laptops and diagnostics.

  • Extensive experience of modern maintenance management systems (MMS) and associated reliability and available trend analysis.

  • Can comfortably work within a team or on their own

  • Sound knowledge of, and compliance to, rules and regulations (internal and external)

  • Able to represent Hitachi in a professional manner at all times

  • Calm and diplomatic under pressure.

  • Ability to investigate complex electrical and mechanical faults and write detailed reports.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Able to interface effectively with all levels of personnel both within and outside the company.

  • Loyal, committed, confident and determined.

  • Intermediate IT skills – typically Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook

  • Reading electrical, pneumatic, mechanical schematics and drawings reading

  • Powered plant and tools – bogie drop, cranes, air systems / 110v tools.

  • Depot Protection

  • Working at Height, COSHH, Manual handling, AC/DC Depot isolation

  • Network Rail Sentinel PTS
