Social Innovation Business

Hitachi’s Social Innovation Business (SIB) provides sophisticated social infrastructure solutions, leveraging Hitachi’s information technology and operational technology experience, for the Internet of Things era.  Designing and building the first US driverless rail transit system, the ultimate electron microscope to develop advanced materials or the ultra-small RFID to support global research on bees —it's all in a day’s work for Hitachi engineers. The SIB is strategically aligned to Hitachi’s priorities and passionately focused on positioning a distinctive Hitachi brand in the marketplace while driving long-term revenue growth for the SIB business.


Our Analytics SME is a market facing role, that focuses on solving our client’s large-scale, business-impacting challenges though utilizing machine learning to analyze client data.  Specifically, this hands-on role will focus on understanding the marketplace, segmenting and targeting potential clients within industries, identifying and quantifying specific client opportunities, determining how applying a broad set of creative and innovative business and technology skills will solve that client’s challenge, and helping to improve repeatability, value proposition and overall win rates for our solution pursuits.


The Analytics SMEs may also participate in conference, shows, and exhibitions to continue to develop business contacts and expand brand equity for Hitachi and the Social Innovation Business group.




Our team is engaged in delivering solutions for Hitachi’s Social Innovation Business across Transportation, Asset Management and Discrete Manufacturing.


Our global Social Innovation Business team is looking for a data scientist expert with 15+ years of experience to lead aspects of the IoT customer driven solution definition, from conception of innovative “first of a kind” analytics solutions, through pilot validation, and production rollout in very short timeframes.


The ideal candidate will have strong hands-on experience performing varieties of analyses (such as ETL, visualization, and data modeling using machine learning in R/Python libraries), industry customer relationships, familiarity with a variety of industry problems and business solutions, and the ability to present sophisticated technologies and related business value propositions to an executive (CXO) audience.



  • Collaborate with clients and Hitachi solution architects to build vision, define requirements, design practical solutions, develop supporting business cases and implement solutions for clients.
  • Influence development teams to implement new statistical or other mathematical methodologies as needed for specific models or analysis, data mining, data classifiers and data cleaning
  • Build hypothesis for implementation of data analytics approaches and build & test analytical models to test the hypothesis
  • Suggest optimization approaches for joint development efforts (e.g., recommend best-fit components across the data pipeline)
  • Extract, transform, load and cleaning the data using SQLs, R, or Python with a variety of tools (e.g., Jupyter, SQL, Spark, Java )
  • Explore and visualize the data to determine quality issues, sampling strategies, and sample size
  • Validate a few candidate analytic solutions by modelling the data utilizing machine learning libraries in R/Python along with other tools in a short period of time
  • Capture and validate benefit value and ROI of analytical solutions to build business cases
  • Deliver ad-hoc analysis and present results in a clear manner to an executive audience


Skills and Qualifications

  • 15+ years of experience manipulating data sets and building statistical models, using large data sets to find opportunities for product and process optimization and using models to test the effectiveness of different approaches to solving client challenges
  • Hands-on experience using a variety of data mining/data analysis methods, using a variety of data tools, building and implementing models, using/creating algorithms and creating/running simulations
  • Experience deploying IIoT and Digital transformation solutions in a production environment
  • Experience developing solutions for repeatability
  • Experience in doing ETL, developing visualization dashboard, and developing machine learning modelling
  • Experience in translating mathematical output into business value
  • Experience in extracting operational actions from business insights
  • Ability to extrapolate specific point solutions into broader scalable solutions
  • Knowledge of Manufacturing, Transportation or Fleet industry/market
  • IoT Business Development or Sales experience
  • Developed relationships with key industry personnel
  • Experience working in a large, complex global company
  • Experience working with the Japanese culture is a plus
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, interpersonal and relationship-building skills
  • Ability to travel on a global basis as needed
