Role Overview

Within Hitachi’s Global Research & Development group we have an exciting new opportunity for a Senior Energy Researcher.  The successful candidate will be highly motivated with a strong interest in the future of energy and addressing climate change with technology and digital solutions.  The successful candidate will be focussed upon leading a small European team of researchers, supported by collaborating with peers in Japan and other global research centres with the aim of expanding a European based research programme that aligns with the work of ABB Power Grids (post completion of the current Hitachi acquisition) and establishes relationships and partnerships with European industry bodies and research institutes that leads to success in the Horizon Europe framework programmes and other European national funding schemes.

The Transportation, Energy & Environment Laboratory (TEEL), is part of the European R&D Centre, located in central London. The TEEL team has a mission to create and validate innovation in the Rail and Energy sectors, leveraging Hitachi’s technologies and customer co-creation.  The focus is across the European Rail industry supporting several Hitachi Business Units and the European Energy sector (including nuclear, power systems, renewables and digital business solutions).  As part of Hitachi’s Global R&D Group, the TEEL team also work and co-create with other European laboratories covering Automotive, Industry, Big Data and Service Design; Hitachi’s other global research centres around the world; and several Technology Innovation research laboratories in Japan.

 

Main Tasks & Responsibilities

  • Report to Head of R&D - Rail & Energy

  • Lead and manage a small energy team (currently three researchers)

  • Establish and drive a European research strategy for Energy that supports existing and new Hitachi Business Units and considers new market opportunities

  • Engage and build Hitachi presence in European energy innovation community by building relationships and partnerships with industry bodies, research institutes and universities

  • Use new relationships and partnerships to identify candidate national projects for Horizon Europe and national funded programmes that will start from FY21

  • Build and maintain strong connections with colleagues of Hitachi R&D in Japan, including traveling to Japan when required to share and discuss the EU trends with Hitachi R&D centres in Japan

  • Ensure new knowledge and capability is protected through patent registration and present the results of research activities within Hitachi R&D as well as in conference and journal publications


Qualifications

Skills & Experience

  • Technical and/or business knowledge with an understanding of power systems at Transmission and/or Distribution level is required

  • Technical and/or business knowledge of at least one field of renewable energy is required and demonstrable experience is preferred

  • An understanding of digital technology (IT and OT) and approaches to developing digital solutions as part of a future green economy and net zero future is preferred

  • Strong academic / research background with a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or in a related field (such as Physics) is essential. A PhD would be preferred

  • Experience of eliciting business requirements, conducting market analysis and impact assessments, developing user stories and experience of assessing the social/economic effects of technology and solutions is preferred

  • Evidence to demonstrate an enthusiasm and interest to research new engineering domains and technologies, and to master and apply the technologies in practice is preferred

  • Experience of identifying, establishing and delivering international consortiums and partnerships with other companies and research organisations, preferably through European framework programmes or European national funding schemes

  • An ability to work across several concurrent projects with differing levels of maturity and complexity is required

  • Strong cultural awareness and ability to interact with people from various continents with experience of managing staff

  • Good communication skills via written material and presentations are essential

  • A second spoken language, preferably Japanese and/or European, would be preferable
