Your new role


Hitachi Rail are looking for talented a Materials Team Leader to join our Train Maintenance Centre in Ashford on a permanent basis.


Specifically, you will be responsible for the following deliverables:

  • The overall management of the stores functions and associated management systems within the depot.
  • Responsible for management, control and issuing of all maintenance materials, spares, equipment, special tools and associated services for all maintenance levels to ensure sufficient stock is on hand to meet the demands of the TSA contract.
  • Responsible for ensuring correct input of material usage data into the company MRP system to maintain material, spares levels and accurate pricing, delivery data.

  • Responsible for maintaining health and safety standards in the stores/warehouse environment.

  • Monitoring the performance of suppliers and support of the external supplier audit process.

  • To maintain and circulate data and trend analysis of material and spare part usage that allows key decisions to be made that will improve upon product / service quality and facilitate reductions in associated costs.
  • To liaise with Procurement / Engineering Team members in the UK during the assessment and approval of new material suppliers to ensure that Maintenance, H & S and environmental needs are adequately identified / addressed.
  • Maintain the calibration process and ensure all tools are calibrated to the correct standard.

  • Manage the indirect materials required to support the maintenance function. Ensuring stock levels are available in line with demand.

  • Liaise with support engineers to ensure correct action is taken with repair/warranty items sent to OEM’s. Provide feedback regarding received items from repair and the OEM’s technical outcome reports.

  • Responsible for ongoing development and maintenance of the Stores procedural documents.
  • Management and development of the store team to include personal development, holiday, staff dialogue, sickness, shift roster and training as needed.
  • Develop professionally and support good working relationships.
  • Assist with KPI’s for the customer and the depot performance review.

  • Identify the root cause of stock inaccuracies and invoke activities to address and prevent re-occurrence

  • Maintain accurate system stock records and monitor minimum stock levels, resize to meet demand patterns. Produce inventory checks and input data into the company MRP system to maintain material levels and configuration.

  • Responsible for the warranty/repair cycle for all maintenance spares, equipment and special tools ensuring on time delivery to the Ashford TMC

  • Raise purchase orders and expedite outstanding orders for materials, spares, equipment and special tools.

  • Manage the material demand process in line with the class 395 exam regime.  Review material requirements to support the Maintenance department.  Liaise with relevant departments, Production, Planning and Engineering to forecast, plan and supply demand. 

  • Learn new skill in accordance with Hitachi’s new business demands as required.

  • Liaison with Hitachi and external personnel as required to complete the duties of the post


About you

  • Significant experience of Stores Management function

  • Intermediate IT skills – typically Word, Excel, Equinox

  • Warehouse and logistics management experience.
  • Must have previous Stores / Warehouse experience

  • Managed a small team of warehouse/logistics  operatives


  • English and Mathematics GCSE level or equivalent
  • ILM/CMI Management/Leadership qualification (Desirable)
  • Sound knowledge of, and compliance to, rules and regulations

  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrate a sense of urgency to resolve issues and conflicts as they arise

  • Must have excellent customer service skills.

  • Leadership and motivational skills.
  • Ability to think clearly and act decisively.
  • Excellent attitude, conscientious approach
  • Able to represent Hitachi in a professional manner at all times

  • Good team worker
  • Knowledge of Warranty / Procurement procedures
  • Valid driving licence
  • CIPS – Chartered Institute of purchasing supply
  • Current and valid counterbalance FLT licence (Company will provide training)

  • Current and valid pendant crane certificate (Company will provide training)
