Role Overview


Within Hitachi’s Global Research & Development group we have an exciting new opportunity for a Team Leader (TL) who will lead a quantum computing processing (QIP) team at the Hitachi Cambridge Laboratory (HCL) and will also be a senior research scientist of the QIP team. Since HCL is located in the Cavendish Laboratory, at the University of Cambridge, the TL will work within the Cavendish Laboratory. So far the main research field of the QIP team is focused on Si-based quantum dot based computing devices, the TL will not only lead the device research but also expand the QIP research into the field of quantum software. The TL will maintain strong, effective collaborations with Universities, research institutes and other companies in order to maximize the research outcomes of the QIP team of the HCL. The TL will use the resources available to them to connect and collaborate in order to expand research activities and achieve the mission of the QIP team which is to conduct research towards realising a scalable quantum computer.

The HCL is part of the European R&D Centre, located in the Cavendish Laboratory, at the University of Cambridge. The HCL has a mission to conduct fundamental research towards new technology leveraging Hitachi’s technologies. As part of Hitachi’s Global R&D Group, the HCL also works and co-creates with the R&D group of Hitachi Ltd.

Main Tasks & Responsibilities

  • Report to Laboratory Manager of the HCL.
  • Lead and manage a QIP team (currently three researchers and one more researcher will join soon).
  • Supervise students who collaborate with the QIP team.
  • Conduct research as a senior research scientist in the QIP team.
  • Expand research of the QIP team from the QIP device field to the field of QIP software such as architecture and algorithms.
  • Lead, manage and propose national projects to expand the QIP research field and to form a research ecosystem partnering with other groups in the UK or the wider world. (Two collaborative projects will start in FY2020)
  • Lead open innovation within the QIP team to expand the QIP research field and to form a wider research ecosystem.
  • Engage and build Hitachi’s presence in the UK, Europe and worldwide by building relationships and partnerships with research institutes and universities.
  • Build and maintain strong connections with colleagues at the Hitachi R&D laboratory in Japan, including traveling to Japan when required to share and discuss the research and the direction of QIP research with the Hitachi R&D centres in Japan.
  • Preparing and submitting patents on the technical solutions to provide competitive advantage and protect Hitachi’s IP; and, after obtaining appropriate protection, publishing technical results. Stimulate the Team members to patent their work.
  • Present the results of the research activities to the Hitachi R&D group as well as at conferences and produce high impact papers for journal publication.

Skills & Experience


The following skills and experience are required:

  • Strong academic background in computer science and/or device physics is needed. A PhD is necessary.
  • Experience of managing a national or/and international project such as Innovate-UK and EU project is desirable.
  • Experience of working in consortiums and partnerships with other companies and customers is desirable.
  • Skills for strategic development and technology road-mapping.
  • Experience of leading novel research project from concept proposal to prototype development
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to analyse operating results of the organisation and its centres versus approved plans and objectives, taking proactive and immediate action when results are not as expected.
  • Possesses in-depth knowledge of current technologies.
  • Strong cultural awareness with the ability to lead small teams and to work and interact with people from various continents and cultural backgrounds is preferred.
