Summary:

Hitachi America, Ltd. (www.hitachi-america.us) is looking for a Ph.D./Master’s degree holder in Materials/Mechanical/Industrial or related Engineering field to join our Industrial Innovation team as a researcher to contribute in the area of Smart Manufacturing/Industry 4.0. The Researcher will collaborate with HAL Researchers, Hitachi R&D in Japan and industry partners as well as customers on Smart Manufacturing initiatives. This position will require sound knowledge on manufacturing processes, industrial equipment and systems, and application know-how of factory manufacturing process optimization, and proven experience in working with industry partners. The position requires the researcher to work as a team member with good communication and written skills

 

Responsibilities:

  • The candidate will work in close collaboration with HAL Researchers and Hitachi R&D in Japan
  • The candidate should be capable of working with industry partners and customers, identifying customers’ needs, challenges, and converting those into actions
  • Ability to assess, evaluate and enhance manufacturing methods by leveraging core know-how of design, materials and fabrication processes. Candidate must be able to identify the effects of tooling and production equipment capability on final product quality to be in a position to provide future improvements
  • The candidate should leverage Industry 4.0 elements to improve processes and productivity
  • Ability to conceive proof of concept ideas and then scale them up to production not just on a single line but across different lines and factories
  • The candidate must have the ability to make plans and execute them. He/she will perform complex process and system analysis with high level of analytical ability
  • Periodic generation of invention disclosures based on research outcome
  • Publish technical papers and attend/present at conferences and seminars

Qualifications

  • Master or higher degree in Materials/Mechanical/Industrial or related Engineering field is required
  • Solid background in manufacturing processes, prior research and industry experience in welding and joining is required.
  • Fundamental understanding in processing-structure-property is required
  • Experience in manufacturing process / equipment sensing, monitoring, and advanced data analytics for manufacturing process optimization is required
  • Experience with PLC programming and ladder logic is desired. Experience of using Manufacturing Execution System is preferred
  • Knowledge and experience in control theory and system architecture design is preferred
  • Prior experience of Database System, such as SQL and MySQL is required
  • Ability of Programming Skills, such as Python, C++ and/or MATLAB is required
  • Experience of presenting / publishing in international conferences or journals is preferred
  • Capability of writing new proposals to sustain research funding is preferred
  • Skills in time and project management is required
  • Must be able to travel locally and internationally up to 25% of the time
