Your new role
We are currently recruiting for a Support Engineer to be based in our Ashford train maintenance centre. In this exciting role you will be responsible for the investigation of maintenance and safety related vehicle defects and subsequent engineering solutions to ensure contractual reliability targets are achieved and maintenance practices implemented/improved.
Specifically, you will be responsible for the following deliverables:
  • Become the Subject Matter Expert (SME) for assigned systems on the C395, taking ownership of all engineering activities linked to the systems.
  • For the assigned systems be responsible for:
    • Managing engineering issues and where required, designing solutions;
    • Create, & manage engineering changes to the design of the vehicles, including ensuring customer / regulatory approval;
    • Assist Production with in-depth fault finding, passing on fault finding skills and the use of schematics on rolling stock assets;
    • To liaise with Procurement / Production members during the assessment and approval of new/changed material and/or suppliers to ensure that Maintenance, H&S and environmental needs are adequately identified / addressed;
    • Work closely with the Performance Engineer to identify and address the root cause of defects and to ascertain the extent of problems arising, documenting findings in formal engineering reports.
    • Responsible for liaising with other Hitachi departments in the investigation of maintenance and safety defects and ensuring compliance with UK legislative requirements;
    • Assist in optimising the Company’s maintenance regime and in the development of best practice in support of current and future contracts.
  • Support the development of documented engineering procedures, practices and policies.
  • Assist in the co-ordination of continuous improvement programmes to improve fleet reliability and ensure contractual requirements are achieved and exceeded.
  • To confirm that C395 complies with specifications & industry standards.
  • Ensure compliance with Hitachi processes & engineering best practice at all times.
  • Build strong, effective professional relationships with Hitachi and external personnel as required to complete the duties of the post.
  • Assist as required when requested by the Assistant Engineering Manager / Engineering Manager.
About you
  • Experience in working on UK rolling stock
  • Sound knowledge of, and compliance to, UK rolling stock rules and regulations
  • Previous experience in product improvement and reliability engineering
  • Position holder must be able to interface effectively with all levels of personnel both within and outside the company
  • Good problem solver
  • Good IT skills – MS Office (Word, Excel etc.)
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Able to represent Hitachi in a professional manner at all times
  • Good team worker


  • HND in an engineering discipline or equivalent qualified engineer
  • Previous experience working on UK rolling stock
  • Sound knowledge of, and compliance to, UK rolling stock rules and regulations
  • Membership of a recognised accredited engineering body
