Your new role
We are currently recruiting for a Production Planner based at our Ashford train maintenance centre. In this exciting role you will develop and deliver the operational maintenance plan with necessary information to allow efficient scheduling and execution of rolling stock maintenance. This is through the identification, prioritisation and allocation of maintenance tasks, materials, special tools and test equipment, Engineering support and the alignment of resource in accordance with contractual and performance requirements.
Specifically, you will be responsible for the following deliverables:
  • Focus on future maintenance work: daily; weekly; monthly; quarterly; and annually in order to develop and continually refine the maintenance plan for the Class 395 fleet.
  • Identify and prioritise maintenance activities in accordance with contractual, performance, technical and safety requirements.
  • Plan the implementation of fleet modifications and fleet checks.
  • Identify and monitor any Engineering, material or man power issues which affect the overall maintenance plan and amend the maintenance plan as required.
  • Liaise with contractors and external repair agencies in order to inform the maintenance plan.
  • Liaise with the Production Manager, Duty Shift Managers (DSM) and Team Leaders (TL) to agree the maintenance plan to be executed.
  • Plan all Ultrasonic Axle Testing and Wheel Turn activities.
  • Incorporate train presentation requirements into the plan
  • Coordinate effective service planning to control fleet mileage in line with all mileage based maintenance activities.
  • Be reactive to incidents, disruptions and emergencies on the operational railway and amend the maintenance plan accordingly.
  • Ensure defects in-service and emerging work requirements are incorporated into the maintenance plan.
  • Monitor the backlog of defects in order to reduce the amount of reactive maintenance and improve reliability.
  • Administer and manage technical investigations to ensure timely resolution.
  • Act as emergency cover for KICC Fleet Engineers where required, this may require flexibility around working hours to suit business needs.
  • Provide planned vs actual reporting as required.
  • Utilise Nexala Equinox (MMS) and other IT applications in order to inform and develop the plan.
  • Participate in daily conference calls & planning meetings.
  • Promote, support and comply with all health and safety practices in the workplace.
  • Manage costs through the effective and efficient alignment of resources.
  • Comply with Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) in order to drive improvement.
  • Any other duties as directed by the Production Planning Manager
About you
  • Sound knowledge of railway operations and experience of rolling stock maintenance
  • Previous experience of planning maintenance and production
  • Sound knowledge of, and compliance to, railway rules and regulations.
  • Excellent problem solving skills and ability to think quickly.
  • Intermediate IT skills – typically Word, Excel, Outlook


  • M & E HNC or served engineering apprenticeship.
  • Vocational qualifications and experience.


  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Able to represent Hitachi in a professional manner at all times.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with key stakeholders.
  • Capable of working in stressful environments for long periods of time.



  • Relevant route knowledge would be advantageous.
  • Assessors Qualification (training will be provided).
  • Network Rail Sentinel PTS (training will be provided).
  • Experience with operations management applications (TRUST, Genius, P2)
