Design Intern

Hitachi America, Ltd. ( is looking to hire a Design Intern for a 6-month Part-Time Internship, to work with our design laboratory in Santa Clara, CA. The successful candidate will be part of a small and growing team performing research and design for various solutions for Hitachi and its customers.  This individual will mainly be responsible for designing ways to inspire future-centered thinking with businesses, scientists, and engineers, and imagining the tools to facilitate that engagement. This individual is expected to work closely with researchers in the team to create and enhance our existing future consideration and analysis tools. In addition to the main responsibilities, this individual will be exposed to multitude of solution design activities the team will be involved with during the program.



  •       Review existing tools and their use cases.

  •       Using client engagement as a vehicle, design new tools and/or improve existing ones, for how they may be used in specific moments of customer engagement.

  •       Organize results in comprehensive and actionable manner.

  •       Communicate design work to stakeholders, receive feedback, and improve on the design. 


  • Enrollment in a PhD level Design program at a university with an emphasis on design strategy and systems design.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply design methods and strategy in multi-stakeholders open innovation projects.
  • Strong interest in solution design within a complex systemic context.
  • Knowledge of design methods and tools for engaging with clients, project team members and other stakeholders.
  • Excellent communication (written and visual) and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and within a team.
  • Prior work experience in an innovation-driven environment a plus.
