Your new role

In this exciting new role you will use your software engineering skills to support all existing, new and future projects as a Database Engineer.

Specifically, you will be responsible for the following deliverables:

  • Design support software management processes and operational databases (application data) for Hitachi’s range of commuter and high speed trains. - The successful candidate will work closely with all relevant internal stakeholders to design the concept, detailed and final designs for new rolling stock projects.
  • Support the approval process (certification and testing) for all new databases, providing guidance to all internal stakeholders where required.
  • Act as the interface between the UK, Italy and Japanese engineering teams. Some travel in Europe and to Japan is expected.
  • Excellent knowledge of systems integration is a requirement as you will need to liaise with other system engineers, maintenance, testing and commercial functions.
  • Assist, where necessary, with technical support for existing Hitachi products.
  • Participate in customer facing design reviews, provide bid support and management for new products and technical support for contract reviews.

About you

  • Knowledge of Train configuration, electric circuit diagrams reading;
  • Knowledge in the application of EN 50657/50128 processes
  • Experience of designing/testing software for embedded systems
  • Good programming skills, being able to read, understand and develop support scripts in at least 2 of the following programming languages:
    • VBA
    • Matlab scripting
    • Python
    • Lua
  • Good aptitude for PC simulation, preferably with some experience in modelling and simulating in Matlab/Simulink/Stateflow
  • Knowledge of the UK/EU Railway Operations, Engineering and standards
  • Good English language skills and ability to communicate effectively
  • Commitment to working as part of a team
  • An understanding of health and safety requirements of a working environment

Desirable Requirements

  • Knowledge of Rolling Stock Approvals (RGS Standards, TSIs, etc)
  • Test and Commissioning knowledge


  • Chartered Engineer or working towards
