Your new role

Specifically, you will be responsible for the following deliverables:

  • Design activities for mechanical systems within Hitachi’s range of commuter and high speed trains.  Contributing in the concept, detailed, and final designs for new rolling stock projects.

  • Technical oversight of mechanical sub-systems for Hitachi’s existing fleets and new projects. This includes but is not limited to the following systems:
    • Carbody
    • Bogie
    • Braking
    • Couplers & Gangways
    • Doors
    • HVAC
    • Interiors

  • Technical ownership of any of the above systems as delegated by the Head of Mechanical Engineering.

  • Excellent knowledge of systems integration is required to allow liaison with other systems engineers, maintenance, and testing functions.

  • Supporting the regulatory approval process (certification and testing) of all new systems and fleets, assisting the Safety & Approvals team and providing guidance to the Manufacturing and Test teams where required.

  • Participate in customer facing design reviews, provide bid support and management for new products, and technical support for contract reviews.

  • Management of medium sized mechanical engineering projects of high complexity through supply chain engagement, design, and implementation. Working with Procurement and Commercial teams to carefully manage the interface requirements between the factory and sub-suppliers, evaluating technical and commercial risk.

  • Act as the interface between the UK, Italy and Japanese engineering teams under the global One Hitachi framework. Some travel in Europe and to Japan is expected.

  • Fault investigation during dynamic commissioning stage and where required to support Service & Maintenance on existing fleets. Riding on test train is required, where necessary.

  • All other duties and responsibilities allocated from line managers.

It is our expectation that successful applicants should be able to demonstrate all of the experience and skills listed below:

Essential Requirements

  • Knowledge of Train configuration, mechanical drawings, control and pneumatic circuits.
  • Experience of designing/testing train systems.
  • Knowledge of the UK/EU Railway Operations, Engineering and standards
  • Good English language skills
  • Experience of and commitment to the effective implementation of equal opportunities and Corporate Social Responsibility policies.
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Commitment to working as part of a team
  • An understanding of health and safety requirements of a working environment

Desirable Requirements

Licences / Competences / experience

  • Chartered Engineer, or working towards Chartership.
  • Knowledge of Rolling Stock Approvals (RGS Standards, TSIs, etc.)
  • Test and Commissioning knowledge
  • Commercial experience advantageous
  • PTS
