Description

As a member of the Hitachi Steering Gear Group, the primary responsibility of this position is to support existing production and future designs projects for existing and potential new customers.  This position will design, plan and coordinate multiple development processes to implement electric steering gear designs to meet customer expectations and support current and future business.  This position has broad responsibilities playing a significant part in the facilitation of the company’s design and development projects. This position may serve as a liaison between the international design teams and customers.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate product development activity between OEM customer and other Hitachi team members (including team members from outside of the US) to ensure customer functional requirements are being met in a timely manner.  This includes attending and participating in local and international meetings as required.
  •  Understand and utilize robust engineering tools such as DRBFM and FMEA’s to drive design and development. 
  • Work with the Hitachi team members and customer design and manufacturing teams to determine root cause and implement corrective actions on design and/or manufacturing issues. 
  • Prepare and present design reports internally and to the customer. 
  • Support and implement ongoing cost reductions actions for existing programs.
  •  Responsible for requirements capture and understanding, requirements negotiation and facilitation of the design and development process for an assigned engineering program.
  • Comprehend and transfer customer requirements to responsible activities within the company.
  • Support sales staff to develop and establish marketing/pricing strategies.
  • Support the development and implementation of engineering strategies and policies supporting the mission and expectations.
  • Support the direction on design and development activities to improve, modify or design new products.
  • Represent the company with the assigned program’s customers, to ensure customer satisfaction with feasibility and design specifications and keep record of customer design changes.
  • Supervise and review product design for compliance with engineering principles, company standards, and customer requirements.
  • Work alongside other program staff (engineering, sales, and test) as well as with customer engineers to accomplish and ensure set goals are met, schedules are maintained and problems encountered during development process are satisfactorily resolved.
  • Travel to customer locations supporting product development and throughout (s) for product reviews, testing, and change updates with periodic travel with customer to company manufacturing facilities (domestic and international).
  • Ensure legal and quality compliance in all engineering product design activities
  • Maintain a safe workplace and follow all regulations and requirements related to safety and environmental compliance.

Qualifications:

Knowledge skills and abilities:

  • Proficiency with 3D CAD software, drawings, and GD&T
  • An experienced professional with excellent interpersonal and time management skills
  • Ability to work independently under minimal supervision
  • Possess strong commitment to team environment dynamics across different cultures with the ability to contribute personal knowledge and follow leadership directives
  • Experience interfacing with and working with customers is strongly desired
  • Possess the ability to coordinate several projects and work with minimal supervision
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (PowerPoint, Excel, Word, etc.)
  • Late / early meetings may be required to facilitate meetings with other design teams in other time zones

Education: Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or related area required. Has thorough knowledge of specialized engineering principles and practices. Master’s degree candidates with relevant experience will also be strongly considered.

Experience: Minimum 5-7 years prior related experience.  2-4 years with Master Degree and significant related experience.

Job level determined by various factors such as organization size, responsibility, career stage, and capabilities.

Supervisory Responsibilities: May be required to supervise the duties of others to perform the job responsibilities as designated by area/department management.

Working conditions:

Physical Demands: Required to sit or stand for long periods of time. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Have ability to work 40 – 60 hours per week.

Travel: Domestic and/or International travel likely required
