Your new role

We are currently recruiting for a Senior Legal Counsel to join our legal team in the UK. In this exciting role you will provide legal advice and support across the Hitachi Rail Limited business in the UK.

Specifically, you will be responsible for the following deliverables:

  • Providing legal advice for sales opportunities and associated bidding activities, including  contractual risk profiles, negotiating with customers and related contract drafting
  • Contributing to the effective contract management of HRL’s manufacturing and maintenance contracts and advising on contract interpretation in support of the project teams  
  • Collaborating with the procurement function in the drafting and negotiation of third party supplier contracts
  • Overseeing internal governance procedures which include liaising with global Hitachi Rail colleagues and  other legal team members
  • Managing external legal advisers as required to ensure appropriate, timely and cost effective support
  • Mitigating legal and commercial risk by improving awareness and understanding of legal issues affecting HRL’s business
  • Developing legal template documents to promote efficiency
  • Updating colleagues on relevant legal developments and delivering/arranging appropriate training to the business
  • Engage with corporate, legal compliance and governance matters as and when required
  • Participating in HRL staff development and training programme
  • Undertaking any other reasonable duties and responsibilities as may be required

About you

Essential Qualifications and Experience

  • Solicitor admitted to practice in England & Wales (or equivalent jurisdiction) with 7+ years PQE
  • Relevant experience and expertise in the main responsibilities outlined above
  • Experience of complex rail or infrastructure projects (familiarity with PPP contracts desirable)
  • Experienced contract negotiator with commercial awareness and sensitivity
  • Awareness of UK public procurement regime
  • Understanding of the UK rail sector
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Commitment to working as part of a team and within a global organisation
  • To be aware of and actively promote and implement HRL’s ethos, culture, values and policies
  • An understanding of health and safety requirements in the rail and manufacturing environment
