Hitachi is looking for an ICT professional to help them implement and manage their public cloud infrastructure.

Role Overview

The Platforms and DevOps Lead engineer will be responsible for the design, implementation and operation of our public cloud environments.  They will work closely with our Head of Solution Development and Technical Leads on the design and delivery of our software and data products and projects in support of Hitachi’s Intelligent Fleet Decarbonisation business.

We are a rapidly growing team building solutions across a variety of public cloud providers.  Specifically we have core solutions in AWS and Azure and a couple of small projects in GCP.  Therefore the Lead Infrastructure and DevOps engineer must have a deep understanding of public cloud infrastructure in general and expertise in AWS as a minimum.    

This role is predominately hands-on as we are a small team and therefore will be expected to manage the full end-to-end life-cycle of our cloud environments, from initial creation using Infrastructure as Code (Terraform), through to operation and ultimately to decommissioning.

The role has considerable growth potential and we are looking for a passionate and dynamic public cloud expert who has a desire to build environments following best practice, turn their hand to new challenges and most importantly relish the chance to learn new skills and push the boundaries of their understanding.

Main Tasks & Responsibilities

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Manage the overall public cloud design and architecture strategy and implementation across all our solutions.
  • Work as part of one or more agile development/integration teams taking ownership of the cloud based environment and providing hands-on DevOps.
  • Supervise / manage more junior and cloud provider specialist DevOps contractors at times.
  • Setup, configure and manage all aspects of the cloud services including virtual networks, gateways, resource allocations, security controls.
  • Advise, influence and recommend strategy and design decisions for the future growth of environment as the team’s solution grows and evolves.
  • Monitoring the capacity and performance of the core server infrastructure
  • Evaluation and selection of suitable products to meet strategic goals

  • Mentoring and skills transfer
  • Manage and administer our suite of SaaS based tools (including Target Process, Confluence, Bitbucket, Swagger Hub, etc.

Skills & Competencies Required

  • Strong desire to expand knowledge in modern cloud architectures
  • Demonstrable experience and knowledge of infrastructure management and monitoring across AWS including any formal AWS certification (e.g. AWS SSO, EC2, VPCs, Security Groups, API Gateway, Cognito, S3, RDS, Kinesis, SQS and SNS, Security Hub, Code Build and Pipeline, Lambda). 
  • Experience deploying changes and managing infrastructure as code with Terraform.
  • Experience deploying, maintaining and scaling applications in ECS clusters using EC2 and Docker containers.
  • Experience delivering CI/CD framework using Github/Bitbucket, AWS CodeBuild, AWS Codepipeline or Jenkins.
  • Experience setting up monitoring and notifications using Cloudwatch logs, metrics and alarms, Grafana.
  • Experience working in an agile development process and managing Dev/QA/Prod environments.
  • Demonstrable experience and knowledge of other public cloud platforms such as Azure and GCP highly desirable along with a desire to expand your skillsets and pick-up new challenges over time.
  • Knowledge on Operating systems (Windows/Linux).
  • Understanding of microservices and containers (Kubernetes & Dockers).
  • Good understanding of Security and IP Networking fundamentals.
  • Desirable - experience with configuration management using Ansible / Chef / Puppet

Working initially on a fixed term payroll contract for one year with a view to becoming permanent thereafter.
