Test Engineer

Under limited supervision, performs complex routine and non-routine technical tasks to assist engineering, manufacturing and quality departments in the testing of mechanical and electrical sub-assemblies, assemblies, subsystems and systems for linear particle accelerators. Oversee the assembly and performs testing on all RF structures. Conducts engineering tests and detailed experimental testing, solving complicated electro-mechanical or electronics problems involved in the operation of the product. Assists engineers in fabrication and assembly of electrical subassemblies for prototype models using schematics, rough sketches and verbal instructions. This is an advanced level technical engineering position requiring the ability to use independent analysis and decision making in support of project objectives.  

  • Performs testing of complex electronic and mechanical systems subassemblies, assemblies, and subsystems. 
  • Participates in the fabrication and assembly of complex electronic systems, as necessary.
  • Conducts engineering tests, sets up detailed experimental testing, and supports solving complicated mechanical, electro-mechanical, electronics and RF structure problems involved in the operation of the product. 
  • High flexibility to perform routine and emergency telephonic support of field service team at the customer sites.
  • Assists in development and developmental testing of structures, loops and other RF components.
  • Records and analyzes data, keeping accurate records of all parameters and assumptions. Derives conclusions from the data analysis.
  • Provide customer support from factory for operational problems.
  • Support production for warranty parts repairs and spare parts sales.
  • Supports Manufacturing Department for warranty parts repairs and spare parts sales.
  • Performs complex routine and non-routine factory test, and operational start-up of linear accelerator electronic and RF assemblies and subsystems with emphasis on schedule and quality compliance.
  • Exhibits ability to troubleshoot to the component level by using standard, logical troubleshooting techniques. 
  • Supports system integration, adjustment, and testing of newly constructed systems. 
  • Responsible for Works with other engineers to development of service and installation procedures and quality standards.
  • Responsible for development of Works with other engineers to develop procedures for testing and troubleshooting, procedures configuration control, and information distribution, etc.
  • Interfaces with Engineering Design Department regarding system integration and product development to increase reliability and serviceability (i.e. provide feedback from customers about product problems, weakness, etc.)
  • Provide customer training in equipment operation, routine maintenance, and corrective maintenance as necessary.
  • Supports ongoing quality assurance efforts, including process definition and improvement, procedural and training development, corrective action, etc.
  • Participate in design reviews to provide input on maintainability and reliability improvements, as well as other issues.
  • Supports Engineering Design team with product development and design review to improve performance, increase reliability, enhance quality, manufacturability, and serviceability, including assessment of feedback from customers
  • Supports Field Service team with installation, start-up, operations, servicing (routine and emergency), and modification of delivered systems as necessary to ensure ongoing customer satisfaction.

Additional Job Functions:.

  • Provides time and resource estimates for tasks in this area.
  • Defines, designs, develops and maintains equipment needed for testing and development.
  • Trains employees in test and tuning procedures as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or directed.


•  B.S. degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering is required. 

• Previous experience in the operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of accelerator systems is strongly preferred.

• Thorough, in-depth knowledge and demonstrated skills in electronics (including RF), vacuum system troubleshooting, and the operation of plasma ion sources preferred.

•  High competency with MS Office Suite (Word. Excel. PowerPoint, Outlook) and other software.

• Strong communications skills and demonstrated ability to build and maintain positive working relationships with internal and external customers. 


Lift and carry 35 pounds occasionally. Communicate by speech and hearing continuously. Repair/install mechanical devices and spare parts, by use of hand tools, etc. Movement within office complex and in confined spaces around machines and products under construction. Communicate by telephone and in person. Visual acuity and manual dexterity needed for close detail work, computer use, operation of machines, use of testing and measurement devices, the assembly of parts at distances close to the eyes and the reading of drawings, blueprints and documents. Normal color perception (no color blindness).


Complex English reading, writing, and strong customer presentation skills.  High math and analytical skills.  Must possess high skill level in areas of independent analysis, judgment, and complex engineering problem solving.  Must be tactful, diplomatic, and professional in all customer interactions.  Moderately complex reading, writing and math skills.  Requires considerable perception, comprehension and analysis in resolving problems and making recommendations.  High task organization skills, including scheduling.

Job conditions:

Works alone and with others in a general office, industrial/medical, and/or laboratory setting when performing assembly, testing, and repairs.
