POSITION SUMMARY

The Senior Field Service Engineer’s (SFSE) primary objective is to provide support activity to all levels and various types of service calls.  The SFSE will spend a portion of their time providing basic training to others both in a classroom setting and on the job.  The SFSE can schedule all service within their territory at the discretion of their manager.  The SFSE will be responsible for ordering and maintaining sufficient traveling inventory to support customers.  Generally, a SFSE will possess the ability to service a wide range of instrument models within a product line in the assigned territory with minimal supervision. 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Major Responsibilities/Activities (List in order of importance the essential functions of the job and the approximate percentage of time spent on each of the activities; describe what must be accomplished, not how it must be done; include supervision or management responsibilities, quality and quantity standards, and  % Time (as applicable.)
    Protect and maintain company property (i.e., traveling inventory, company care, test equipment, tools, etc.)
  • Pick up and return messages and service calls from customers in a manner meeting service department policies
  • Set and keep appropriate schedules for service on the assigned equipment
  • Maintain appropriate records of all work performed and training received
  • Provide highly detailed documentation for the purpose of problem resolution and/or engineer training
  • Provide training to less experienced engineers as directed
  • Drive to multiple customer sites and Hitachi High Technology America (HTA) offices as directed by management
  • Portray professionalism and pride in appearance while conforming to policy
  • Provide a positive attitude to all employees and customers
  • Complete assigned On the Job Training (OJT), with the goal of instrument certification
  • Manage and maintain traveling inventory according to department policy and procedure
  • Flexible working hours that occasionally includes authorization to work from home or work off-site
  • Complete assigned formal training with a grade of 80% or better on all tests
  • Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor at all times, especially when interacting with other employees, management, and customers
  • Other duties as assigned

EDUCATION, LICENSES, AND/OR CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

  • BS degree in Electrical Engineering (or related field) or equivalent combination of education and experience required

EXPERIENCE AND TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience using digital volt meters, oscilloscopes, hand tools, and computers
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience disassembling and assembling intricate parts as related to selected instruments
  • Basic Knowledge and understanding of Physics and Chemistry
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with limited supervision
  • Comply and adhere to company policies
  • Must be eligible for and receive company credit card
  • Knowledge of analog and digital circuitry as applied to our equipment
  • Must have and retain a valid driver’s license in resident State, have an acceptable driving record, and be insurable by our insurance company
  • Although most of a SFSE’s travel will be localized within the assigned district area, some domestic and/or international travel is required (less than 20%)

SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIREMENTS

  • Demonstrate strong work ethic
  • Demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills with management, co-workers, internal and external customers
  • Ability to effectively communicate information to customers and manager regarding service activities and schedules
  • Ability to work without instructions
  • Ability to perform moderately complex service calls relating to instruments learned
  • Ability to complete system installation including Advanced Customer Training
  • Ability to perform OJT or classroom training to other Field Service Engineers on basic system level troubleshooting
  • Ability to work from schematics using various test equipment and mathematical calculations specific to electronics
  • Ability to effectively interface with customers, service department personnel and others
  • Ability to provide preventive maintenance and emergency service on several instruments or product lines
  • Ability to completely install specified instruments
  • Ability to give Advanced Customer training
  • Ability to install or setup equipment at Sales Shows
  • Ability to use a laptop computer, monitor, keyboard, and mouse with or without accommodations
  • Ability to use a telephone, smartphone device, copy machine, fax machine, and other office equipment with or without accommodation
  • Ability to comply with all corporate safety requirements and directives

SAFETY REQUIREMENTS

  • Follow all Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements which can include safety glasses, protective gloves, safety shoes, wearing a respirator, and more
  • Follow all equipment specific safety protocols

POSITION - SAFETY RISKS AND HAZARDS

  • Work on tools with electrical wiring
  • Work on tools with somewhat sharp edges
  • Work in areas where hazardous chemicals are used

EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS

  • Use of oscilloscope, digital voltmeter, and common hand tools such as screw drivers and wrenches
  • Use of a laptop computer, monitor, mouse, and keyboard repeatedly for long periods of time
  • Occasional use of a copy machine and other office related equipment

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle
  • Ability to carefully push, pull, and navigate moving a hand cart with expensive equipment in and out of vehicles and buildings
  • Ability to lift/carry/push/pull up to 50 pounds occasionally, 25 pounds frequently, and 10 pounds regularly
  • Ability to lift/carry/push/pull weights over 50 pounds using a cart or hand truck or manually with the assistance of others
  • Ability to clearly see focused images and data from a microscope with or without accommodation
  • Ability to sit for long periods of time
  • Ability to use a computer and look into a computer monitor for long periods of time
  • Ability to use hands/fingers to handle fine/small parts and/or tools on a frequent basis
