Your new role

The Internal Audit (IA) Department within Hitachi Rail Limited (HRL) is looking for a dynamic and ambitious auditor to join the team.

The Internal Audit (IA) Department within Hitachi Rail Limited (HRL) is looking for a dynamic and ambitious auditor to join our the team. Following Hitachi Rail’s recent announcement of its “One Hitachi” strategy, the company is transitioning from a regional to a global operating model, bringing an exciting evolution and new opportunities to the Internal Audit department and the way it operates. You will play a key role in developing the audit, risk and compliance culture in a growing business, within a progressive and forward-thinking IA department. This is a new Senior IT Auditor or an IT Audit Manager role (depending on your experience) role created for someone with excellent IT Audit, J-SOX and SAP GRC experience and is an ideal opportunity for a high-performing IT auditor who is ready for the next step in their career.

You will report into the Senior IA Manager and work collaboratively with the wider UK-based team consisting of the Head of Internal Audit & J-SOX, a Senior Auditor, as well as our international IA and J-SOX ITGC colleagues based in Japan and Italy.

The UK’s IA department was set-up in 2016 and has been instrumental in establishing HRL’s Internal Audit capability, implementing a comprehensive J-SOX Compliance Programme and supporting the business in implementing a new SAP GRC Programme. Being a relatively young function, within a business that has experienced tremendous growth in recent years, the team is constantly looking to evolve and improve their ways of working, which creates a stimulating environment for exploring new ideas to support and add value to the business. This role has a diverse remit and provides a real opportunity for the successful candidate to put their own stamp on this role.

To be successful in this role you need to be a self-starter who is comfortable working independently on end-to-end audit and compliance assignments, managing multiple projects concurrently and have the soft skills and resilience to manage and influence stakeholders at all levels. As well as being a strong auditor, technical SAP experience is also key to this role.

Specifically, you will be responsible for the following deliverables:


  • Support the Senior Manager and the Head of IA & J-SOX in delivering Hitachi Rail Limited’s J-SOX Annual Compliance Programme, focussing on ITGCs (IT General Control) and IT CLCs (Company Level Controls)
  • Coordinate and lead J-SOX workshops with IT Process and Control Owners to understand and document business processes and controls
  • Be the J-SOX subject matter expert and key point of contact for queries form process and controls owners
  • Perform J-SOX ITGC and IT CLC controls testing and agree results and remediation actions with control owners
  • Prepare and submit J-SOX reporting forms as per the requirements of the Hitachi Global J-SOX Manual
  • Work closely with J-SOX coordinators across the business to update/develop process documentation when required.
  • Work closely with key process owners to ensure appropriate implementation of agreed remedial actions
  • When appropriate, propose control and process improvements to the J-SOX framework

Internal Audit

  • Support the Senior Manager and the Head of IA & J-SOX in delivering Hitachi Rail Limited’s Annual Audit Plan (for IT aspects)
  • Planning and execution of a wide base of complex IT audits in accordance with Group IA Methodology, and supporting with other corporate / operational audits where required
  • Prepare high quality working papers and audit reports
  • Debrief auditees on audit results in a clear and concise manner and agree mitigating action plans that will appropriately address the identified findings
  • Utilise internal audit assignment and reports to capture and provide valuable insights to management, through the use of data analytics and infographics
  • Work closely with action owners to ensure appropriate implementation of agreed audit actions

SAP Governance, Risk and Compliance (GRC)

  • Be the SAP GRC subject matter expert and support the implementation of the new SAP GRC Programme within the business
  • Coordinate SAP GRC Business Compliance activities and be the main gatekeeper of the SAP GRC RACM (Risks and Controls Matrix)
  • Being the liaison person between the SOD (Segregation of Duties) Committee, Business Process Owners (BPOs) and SAP GRC Admin team for changes and/or periodic review of the SAP GRC RACM
  • Support BPOs with embedding mitigating controls for unremediated GRC risks
  • Coordinate the annual self-assessment over mitigating controls with BPOs, as well as subsequent SOD Committee approval of the controls status
  • Periodically test and validate the operating effectiveness of mitigating controls
  • Work closely with BPOs and SAP GRC Admin team to ensure timely and appropriate action is taken to address ineffective controls or unmitigated risks
  • Support ongoing maintenance of SAP GRC Ruleset and RACM


  • Support the development and maintenance of a risk and controls culture across the business
  • Support Hitachi Rail Limited in readiness activity ahead of Corporate Audits (by Hitachi HQ), and perform periodic follow-up reviews on audit actions from previous Corporate Audits
  • Perform other project and ad-hoc duties as required by the Senior Manager and the Head of IA & J-SOX  
  • Action tracking and reporting through collaborations with action owners
  • Support the strengthening and monitoring of Hitachi Rail Limited internal control system
  • Liaison and engagement with External Auditors, ensuring collaborative and cost efficient working, enabling External Auditors to place reliance on work performed by Internal Audit

About you


  • Sound J-SOX / SOX testing experience, from industry or from practice
  • Sound experience in IT General Controls and Application Reviews
  • Sound SAP GRC / SAP Technical experience
  • Prior IT Audit experience gained within practice or industry, ideally within a large, complex, multinational organisation
  • Relevant qualification (CISA, CRISC, CISM, CISSP, IIA, ACA or equivalent professional certificate)
  • Working knowledge of IT governance frameworks and standards such as COBIT, COSO, ITIL
  • Excellent inter-personal skills and be able to work as part of a cross-cultural team
  • Ability to work across multiple tasks at the same time liaising with multiple departments
  • Ability to be able to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Strong attention to detail and good analytical skills
  • Ability to influence at all levels of seniority
  • PC proficiency, including MS Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook
  • Must be willing to travel to operating sites around UK and occasional travel to Japan and Italy


  • 4+ years of relevant experience
  • Understanding and appreciation of Japanese working practices
  • Experience in data analytics and data manipulation
  • Experience/understanding of the manufacturing/engineering industry producing heavy plant or machinery (e.g. Railway, Aerospace, Automotive)
  • Experience of auditing major projects and change programmes
