Job description
Hitachi Rail is looking for an enthusiastic self-motivated Chief Safety & Security Officer - Americas (Turnkey Bids) who thrives in a fast-paced environment. The successful candidate is comfortable performing a wide range of tasks from administrative to strategic. The position is based in Mississauga, Ontario.

Project Description
The Ontario Line is a multi-billion dollar segregated, stand-alone, rapid transit system that connects Ontario Science Centre to the Exhibition and Ontario Place grounds. The Ontario Line is approximately 16 km in length with 15 stations. Over half of the route is in tunnel and served by 8 underground stations. There are six interchange/intermodal stations, connecting to GO train services at Exhibition/Ontario Place and East Harbour, and to the Toronto Transit Commission ("TTC") subway network on Line1 at both Queen and Osgoode stations, on Line 2 at Pape station, and to the future Eglinton Crosstown LRT (Line 5) at the Ontario Science Centre. Stations will also provide connections to surface bus and streetcar routes.
This role will also support other projects across North America.

Accountabilities
The Chief Safety Officer shall be responsible for the safety of the project in all respects, including:
(i) all activities to satisfy Project Co's safety obligations in Schedule 29 -Safety, System Assurance and Security;
(ii) the development and implementation of the System Safety Plan, Project Co Safety Management System and Emergency Response Plan;
(iii) the delivery of all Engineering Safety and Assurance Cases;
(iv) coordinating with the Contracting Authority, Emergency Service Providers, Railway Companies, Project Co Independent Safety Assessor and the Civil Contractors on all aspects of system safety and assurance; and
(v) acting as the point of contact with Contracting Authority in respect of the system safety and assurance activities.

• The Chief Safety Officer is accountable for the Project Co.'s entire safety and posture, both physical and digital. The CSO leads a team of managers across multiple areas including safety, information security, privacy, physical security, internal investigations, and operation continuation.
• Provides leadership, vision, and strategic direction for the effective identification, development, management, and assessment of security initiatives and standards which are aligned with the Project Co's strategic priorities and business objectives.
• Directs the coordination of safety and security efforts across the organization partnering with Information Technology, Human Resources, and Corporate Communications, Legal, Facilities management and other groups.

Required Skills/ Knowledge
• 15 years of experience with at least 5 of these years in positions with Safety management leadership responsibilities on rail projects.
• Knowledge of Toronto and other World Class transit systems
• Must demonstrate a thorough understanding of transit systems re: Toronto, Ontario, National, and Global.
• Board of Canadian Registered Safety Professionals Certification.
• Strong interpersonal skills, leadership, independence and ability to manage priorities;
• Skilled in interacting with level employees and managers;
• Excellent communication skills and a strong, self-motivated, work ethic;
• Ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure;
• Excellent organizational and time management skills and the ability to work on multiple demands simultaneously.

Desired Skills/ Knowledge
• Local experience considered an asset.
• Professional affiliations, certificates, or awards desirable

Education / Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree (e.g. Health and Safety, MIS, engineering, business administration) is required
• Advanced degree such as MBA or MS preferred.
