Location: Remote with occasional hours at DC office as needed.

Status: Intern, Part-time (20 hrs. / week)

Duration: Jan 2022 through May 2022

Government Relations Intern – Advocacy

Hitachi, Ltd. Washington Corporate Office is seeking a politically interested Government Relations Intern to be based in our Washington, DC office. The individual will gain hands-on experience supporting Hitachi’s advocacy efforts to influence U.S. public policy impacting our business and operations. The person will partner with our team and work towards maintaining effective working relationship with officials and staff of various branches of government, as well as other key stakeholders who may influence the development of public policy important to the company.

The internship opportunity will focus on supporting the advocacy function of the office while developing key skills in:

  • Government Relations (55%): Work to achieve favorable outcomes on federal policy proposals via tracking and summarizing Congressional hearings and track key members of Congress who represent Hitachi facilities in the U.S. State advocacy may also be part of the role when needed.
  • Relationship Building (20%): May be asked to participate in activities in the DC metro and virtually including preparing for and attending public or political events to help cultivate and maintain effective relationships.
  • Support (10%): When necessary, provide team support to other Hitachi employees in the DC office to ensure smooth operations and organization.
  • Research (10%): Based on Hitachi policy priorities, research and create a report and presentation to give Washington teammates. The research project will be suggested by the intern, but approved by the Director, Government & External Relations, and must advance the business interest of Hitachi.
  • Event Attendance (5%): Attend DC events, virtual or in person, and provide memorandums on event presentations and details for inclusion in newsletters and/or providing insights for executives.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

  • Current enrollment in an academic program, undergraduate preferred. While not required, a focus on Public Administration, Political Science, Government Affairs, International Relations, Communications/Journalism, or related degree is preferred.
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States.
  • Ability to build strong working relationships.
  • Detailed and organized, with an aptitude for clear and concise written and verbal communications and great time management skills.
