About Intelligent Fleet Decarbonisation

Part of SIB, Intelligent Fleet Decarbonisation (IFD) is providing solutions for commercial vehicle and public transport fleets across Europe, using a wider perspective on energy opportunities to improve fleet total cost of ownership and facilitate the transition to zero carbon. We aim to simplify and de-risk the process of switching to electric vehicles (EVs) by offering a comprehensive end-to-end approach, considering not just vehicles and charging infrastructure, but also financing, optimisation, energy procurement, as well as potential for energy storage and on-site generation.

Role Overview

SIB-EMEA is looking for a Chief Data Scientist to head up the data science capability for our new EV fleet business.  

The candidate must:

  • Have 7-10 years’ of experience on highly complex data science projects, mining large data sets in complex business domains to unlock new business value through predictive analytics and advanced optimisation.
  • Be able to define the data strategy of the EV fleet business, setting out how the business can extract maximum value from data, which data sets are most strategic, how data should be acquired and managed, strategies for handling sensitive data etc.
  • Be able to lead a highly collaborative team to solve a complex business problem using a structured, data-driven approach.
  • Be a highly articulate communicator who is able to present complex ideas in clear business language to senior executives and to represent Hitachi in public forums.
  • Be a highly effective coach and leader, committed to driving best practise and able to inspire and develop the skills and careers of junior data scientists.
  • Be an advocate for renewable energy, electric vehicles and low carbon technology.

Technical requirements:

  • Extreme fluency in pandas, writing vectorised and performant code, ideally OOP and modularised functional code.
  • Taking pride in a code base, with a bias towards software engineering principles – clear commented code, and documentation to support modelling and insights
  • ML Library Experience (strong experience in sklearn as a minimum) and awareness of ML Principles (overfitting & underfitting, sampling methods etc)
  • Experience in time series modelling (forecasting and prediction) and unsupervised clustering algorithms
  • Experience with SQL databases: we use PostgreSQL to create relevant views of our data.
  • Strong visualisation knowledge (matplotlib, seaborn, plotly) and ability to clearly summarise findings graphically and with supporting data tables.
  • Proficiency in Git as a version control software
  • Familiarity of dealing with large datasets (often millions of rows in Python, up to hundreds of millions of rows in SQL)

The candidate should preferably have:

  • An understanding of the Electric Vehicle (EV) landscape and/or electricity grid operations (ideally at DNO level)
  • Understanding of the wider context of the UK and European energy markets and policy drivers will be a benefit
  • Understanding of renewable generation technologies
  • Knowledge of Spark, PySpark and MLLib.
  • Experience with cloud computing frameworks
  • Basic knowledge of Docker
  • (Nice to have) Experience/awareness of REST APIs, particularly in Flask/FastAPI/Django (and Django REST Framework) as well as productionising code

The candidate will have an excellent academic background.
