General Responsibilities:

The primary responsibility of this position is a design engineer for Hitachi Steering Gear Group to support existing customers and potential new customers.  The duties include coordinating and completing all essential tasks and responsibilities as a team member of the Hitachi Steering Gear Design and Development Team to support existing customers and to obtain future business.

Job Responsibilities:

The systems engineer is responsible for working as a team member of the Hitachi Steering Gear Group to support the customer throughout the development and production process of electric steering gear designs. 

The candidate will need to work with minimal direction but would work under the direction of DE management and support other DE staff located in Farmington Hills, MI and Sunbury, OH facilities. This position will be located at Farmington Hills, MI facility, working remotely and in person when required. Duties to include the following:

  • Review & understand customer specifications for electric steering gears
  • Review designs that meet the internal and customer specifications for functional requirements
  • Prepare and maintain various engineering documents to support design and production of electric power steering gears
  • Participate in ISO 26262 Functional Safety, DFMEA/PFMEA, and internal reviews as needed.
  • Support prototype builds for new & existing products, including vehicle builds at customer.
  • Support validation testing of new & existing products with failure analysis as needed
  • Test and troubleshoot issues as they arise.
  • Prepare and present final reports for internal and customer reviews.
  • Responsible for working with internal and customer engineers, as necessary, to ensure that program goals are met, schedules are maintained, and problems encountered during the development process are satisfactorily resolved. 
  • Assist other project team members and design engineers, in resolving issues related system design, including interfacing with hardware, software, functional safety, and other engineers.
  • The candidate may be required to travel a limited extent within the U.S.  Travel to Japan is a strong possibility when conditions allow.

Qualifications (Education, Skills and/or special Knowledge):

  • At a minimum, possess a bachelor degree in engineering (mechanical, electrical, or SW) or any suitable combination of degree and applicable automotive work experience
  • An experienced professional with excellent interpersonal and time management skills
  • Experience with mechatronics, electric motors, and Functional Safety is strongly preferred.
  • Possess strong commitment to team environment dynamics with the ability to contribute personal knowledge and follow leadership directives
  • Working knowledge of laboratory test equipment such as multi-meters, scopes, etc. preferred.
  • Experience interfacing with and working with customers is strongly desired
  • Possess the ability to coordinate several projects and work with minimal supervision
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel, Word, etc.)
  • Domestic and/or International travel is required 
  • Late / early meetings may be required to facilitate meetings with other design teams in other time zones

Education:  Bachelor or Master’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical and/or Computer Engineering or any suitable combination of degree and applicable automotive work experience

Experience:  Applicable experience in automotive MCU/ECU development desired.

Job level determined by various factors such as organization size, responsibility, career stage, and capabilities.

Working conditions:

  • Physical Demands: Required to sit or stand for long periods of time. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.

  • Travel: Domestic and international may be required as needed. The candidate will occasionally need to travel to multiple global locations to support project development when conditions allow.
