Hitachi Rail is looking for an enthusiastic self-motivated Construction and Installation Engineer who thrives in a fast-paced environment in a wide variety of Construction and Installation related tasks from administrative to strategic within a matrixed Project and Technical Organization.

The position is based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA but interfaces with other groups and projects globally.

  • Interfacing to Management, Engineering, Bids, Procurement and Field Construction/Installation functional areas in a matrixed business environment.
  • Preparation of internal Project Technical Specifications (PTS) for to be constructed/installed Project elements to acquire contractually sound bids from Subcontractors and Procurement for these efforts.
  • Estimation preparation and/or evaluating as prepared construction/installation estimates from Subcontractors.
  • Subcontractor evaluations and assessments for 360 degree view for net value to Projects.
  • Scheduling construction and installation activities.
  • Ability to successfully challenge of claims and variations within construction and installations.

Required Skills/ Knowledge

  • Understanding of to be constructed/installed wayside elements (Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, Signaling, and Telecoms Subsystems) that comprise a transit system in a Brownfield or Greenfield project.
  • Understanding of construction/installation sub-contractors bidding, construction/installation practices and business strategy plus execution for Projects.
  • Understanding of Project scheduling related to construction/installations.
  • Core skills: Communication, Presentation, Documentation Preparation, Estimating, Budgeting, Planning, Project Strategy, Technical Writing.
  • Special skills: Envisioning constructed/installed Project relative to technical details and being able to express within Contract documents.
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Strategic approach for construction and installation initiatives for baselining reporting structure and format across Projects.
  • Ability to identify construction/installation risks and appropriately disposition.
  • At Project Site, evaluations and strategic ways forward for resolutions of items in the constructed/installed Project environment.
  • Commercial attentiveness and sensitivity in Bids and Projects.
  • Ability to complete written reports and electronic communications expeditiously and with a high-degree of accuracy and professionalism.
  • Computer proficiency with a strong knowledge of PCs and software applications related to the work.

Education and/or Experience

  • Minimum of ten (10) plus years of experiences.
  • BS Degree in Engineering or Construction (Or Other Applicable Experiences)


  • Variable with approx. averaged 25%.
