Summary of the position:

The Director of Strategic Sourcing will lead and support a team of Global Sourcing Managers and the overarching strategic sourcing execution of the organization.   The candidate will engage a cross section of functional stakeholders to support the requirements of the organization and will align sourcing strategies with the product positioning objectives of the company and organizational cost reduction initiatives.   Furthermore, the candidate will manage core supplier relationships with a mandate to meet organizational standards in respect to quality, service, technical support, and best commercial value.  

The candidate will have proven sourcing expertise within industrial manufacturing setting. Candidate must be able to understand core specification attributes and associated cost structures and have broad knowledge of global suppliers and market trends.  

The role will report to the Vice President, Global Supply Chain Management.   The work site location is Michigan City, Indiana or Chicago, Illinois and will require travel to other global manufacturing locations, supplier facilities or tradeshows/events as needed. 

Duties and responsibilities:

The role will include the following responsibilities and requirements:

  • Maintain effective links with global stakeholders within the organization and includes the ability to manage and communicate to stakeholders across various levels, functions, countries and cultures.
  • Provide expert category and strategic sourcing advice.  Seek out examples of best practice in the various industrial materials categories for the benefit of organization.
  • Execution to specific cost reduction targets and effective communication of results to senior leadership.
  • Effectively manage Category Managers and/or Category Buyers. Develop individuals and teams to enhance performance.
  • Maintain an expert understanding of the key supply market drivers, market conditions and trends and develop robust category strategies with the correct level of analytical rigor.
  • Understand the impact of the business's strategy on the future requirements of the category areas.
  • Ensure the strategy delivers ‘best value’ based on a combination of quality, service and cost, and that the strategic sourcing process is applied consistently and appropriately.
  • Proactively engage with senior stakeholders to obtain buy-in of project priority and proposed strategies.
  • Manage procurement tenders and work in conjunction with the legal unit to ensure the contract’s appropriateness for the organization and relevant laws.
  • Lead formal periodic supplier business reviews that includes criteria to measure supplier performance in terms of cost, risk, stakeholder satisfaction, technical support, supplier delivery/quality performance, investment, and continuous improvement.
  • Manage and develop appropriate relationships with suppliers to maximize value to the business.
  • Analyze and improve existing processes, systems, practices and procedures.
  • Use consistent strategic sourcing processes and e-procurement tools (such as auctioning) and understand the best applications for the use of specific tools.

Qualifications:

Education:

  • BS Degree in Engineering, Supply Chain, Business Administration or other relevant degree program.  Advanced degree preferred.

Professional experience:

  • 15 years of functional supply chain, strategic sourcing and procurement experience with progressive advancement within an industrial manufacturing setting
  • International business and cultural experience
  • Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of an organization (internal/external) and across global nationalities and cultures
  • High level of expertise in the use of analytical tools such as Excel and ERP systems.
  • Capable of leading commercial negotiations
  • Strong presentation skills
  • Ability to self-motivate, multi-task and work independently as part of a geographically dispersed, virtual team
  • Strong interpersonal skills and professional demeanor
  • Ability to travel on a domestic and international basis

Direct reports:

  • Category Managers covering specific commodity buying segments such as fabrications, machining, rotating equipment, drives, heat exchangers, fasteners, chemical/lubricants, bearings and other industrial materials, assemblies and parts.
