Description

Hitachi Rail is looking for an enthusiastic self-motivated Head of External Communications & Marketing Americas (Regional Leader) who thrives in a fast-paced environment. The successful candidate is comfortable performing a wide range of tasks and able to own and execute a strategy to support our regional business’ priorities, while managing a small but growing team. The position will be based in Pittsburgh, Washington DC or Toronto, ON Canada.

Accountabilities

  • Leading proactive & reactive communications (PR, digital content & marketing materials) around major programs – train building and upgrading of infrastructure – across North America.
  • Overseeing brand building & marketing activities to support new bids, particularly in Canada.
  • Setting the framework for engagement with political and industry stakeholders on behalf of the regional business
  • Telling rich, interesting stories about the work the business is doing across key themes of ‘Digital’, ‘Sustainability’, ‘Trusted Partner’ and ‘Employer of Choice’ and connect them to our digital and social channels so they reach key target audiences.

Strategy

  • Ensure definition and execution of Regional Plans for external communications & marketing, plans that help to Build the Brand, Win the Work in region with support of Group External Communications & Marketing teams.
  • Ensure definition and execution of Project Communications Plans (including story mining) for Win the Work / Project Delivery activities for Global Projects managed in partnership with Hitachi Ltd, Hitachi Rail Regional Teams, and central ECM teams.
  • Provide high level advice on External Communications & Marketing matters for the North American region to senior business leaders

Business Management

  • Ensure the implementation at Regional level of all the activities related to External Communications & Marketing
  • Ensure business partner level support to regional Sales & Projects leaders and sales teams as required for all related to external communication.
  • Ensure the proposal and management of communications plans integrated with regional networks (Hitachi Ltd, sites, projects, customer counterparts)

Business Execution

  • Ensure delivery of regional communication campaigns and marketing activities as identified in the Regional Plan, with execution support of regional or Group teams as required.
  • Ensure identification and development of Hitachi Rail stories aligned to strategy (stories, project milestones, customer events) – with support of central Groups teams
  • Ensure identification and management of potential reputational risks – with a particular focus on sites and projects – with support of central Group teams
  • Ensures governance of regional network (e.g. local communications agencies, contractors or ambassadors on local sites or projects)
  • Ensure identification and management of potential reputational risks – with a particular focus on sites and projects – with support of central Group teams
  • Ensure the development of competencies, skills and knowledge of the resources in alignment with Group HR strategy, guidelines and policies
  • Manage a small team and allocate budget and resources to the specific activities in alignment with Group priorities
  • Ensure the implementation of the Global Hitachi Rail Group culture and the development of behaviours/competences in line with the Hitachi values and a collaborative approach

Required Skills/ Knowledge

  • Experience with PR & Media engagement, stakeholder engagement (e.g. political, industry groups), creation of written material (e.g. content, speeches, opinion pieces, new articles, blogs), budget management, line management
  • Excellent communicator with strong interpersonal skills to interact with a range of stakeholders across multiple disciplines
  • Ability to utilise social media and modern digital platforms to support communications activity and corporate profiling
  • Strong relationship building skills to enable the post holder to establish and maintain effective internal working relationships with business departments, colleagues and partners
  • Ability to exercise judgement, identifying and managing risks and making clear, pragmatic decisions within a busy environment.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, organisational and project management skills
  • IT literate: Familiar with using word processing, databases, spread sheets, and modern digital platforms
  • Stamina, energy and enthusiasm to handle the demands of a global business that is growing rapidly and developing a portfolio of new business in the UK and in Europe
  • Able to attend events and other off-site functions with occasional overnight stays
  • Interested in current affairs and knowledge of the media and social media landscape
  • Ability to travel between our locations on a frequency of around once per month for a period of approximately 2-5 days. Some international travel may be required, but this is unlikely to be frequent.

Desired Skills/ Knowledge

  • Prior experience in the transportation, utilities or infrastructure sectors with a strong focus on multi-stakeholder partnerships an advantage
  • Experience of managing in person or online events, managing teams, agencies and working for large multinational corporates
  • Experience working with customer or partner Communications & Marketing teams and creating content for corporate social media channels (LinkedIn, Twitter)  
  • Second language

Education / Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing, Communications, Business Administration or equivalent degree
