Role Overview

The ZeroCarbon Fleet business is entering its 'accelerate’ phase following a successful ‘incubation’ with successful wins in both EBaaS (Electric buses and depot infrastructure) and EVAAS (light commercial vehicles and depot infrastructure) business areas already in place and ready to be built upon, particularly in the UK. 

As part of the Social Innovation Business and reporting to the Head of Operations business, you will drive the successful delivery of our projects and programmes.

Required to ensure every programme is implemented successfully to ensure the highest possible value to the business and programme participants. You will create deadlines to guide project implementation and create programme objectives and manage project budgets as well as ensure projects are delivered on time.

You will have a background in delivering multi-million pound contracts, including construction projects, with multiple stakeholders, over different geographies, preferably in the energy and utilities markets.

You will be an advocate for renewable energy, electric vehicles and their charging infrastructure, technology and social innovation with an exceptional eye for detail.

Working collaboratively with other Hitachi Business Units, clients and prospects, you will work with the delivery, sales and commercial function to scope programme requirements to establish deliverable- and to-budget pilots, initial deployments and roll-outs of combined low carbon technology and depot electrification solutions and systems.  You will establish a clear hand-over of the programme of work to the business-as-usual delivery team at the appropriate stage of the programme delivery process and provide support to our clients either directly or through local sales teams during the bidding, programme delivery and sales process to ensure the successful delivery of solutions.

Main Tasks & Responsibilities:

  • The successful delivery of all projects to agreed targets, e.g., programme, budget, and quality.
  • Identifying and agreeing project objectives and developing a strategy for achieving these.
  • Identifying and managing any matters that could pose a potential contractual/commercial risk to Hitachi Europe.
  • Facilitating communication, co-ordination and information flow with the Client and within the project team, including any subcontractors and partners (internal and external).
  • Assembling and owning the project delivery programme and delivery plans.
  • Protecting the commercial interest of Hitachi Europe, including timely and accurate invoicing and effective credit control for optimal cash flow (with the support of the finance team); comparing revenue with predicted costs and identifying risk allowances, margin and provisions – at project set-up and monthly thereafter, including Earned Value reporting.
  • Closing out all projects on completion, archiving project documentation, updating market information, ensuring that lessons learnt are captured and disseminated internally and ensuring that a Client Satisfaction survey is initiated.
  • Creating and managing the project / programme budget
  • Monitoring progress of a programme and identifying risk factors that can cause delays
  • Assigning tasks to project implementation teams
  • Compiling and writing progress reports and making presentations to management and other stakeholders
  • Ensuring programme operations comply with internal control policies and legal requirements
  • Identifying ways to improve productivity and efficiency
  • Coordinate work with Business Analysts, Project Managers and the operations delivery team on other project work-streams to ensure dependencies and risks are well managed
  • Work closely with 3rd party development partners to ensure a high quality of delivery
  • Manages key stakeholder relationships on behalf of the business, ensure that sub-contractor agreements are fully delivered, and represent the business internally and externally
  • Work with the Head of Operations to design and implement the Programme EAM structure

Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Experience

The ideal candidate will have experience in a number of the following areas:

  • Understands and has experience in deploying various forms of construction contract, in particular JCT, NEC3 or 4.
  • Chartered Engineer/Architect or equivalent with demonstrable experience managing design, build and/or operate commissions on large infrastructure projects.
  • At least 10 years’ experience of running large scale programmes
  • Knowledge of the UK electricity market and electric vehicle charging
  • Experience in managing the delivery of all stages of construction projects, from early design/planning through to handover/occupation.
  • Strong communicator required with ability to manage all disciplines including H&S, quality, planning & productivity, design management & co-ordination, contract management & administration, commercial management, and project governance.
  • Experience of managing design projects to time, cost and quality objectives and familiar with programming and earned value techniques.
  • Be available to travel across the UK and work away from home on client sites if required.
  • The ability and willingness to get into the detail of the programme objectives to ensure delivery and facilitate problem solving
  • The ability to command respect and to create a sense of community amongst the members of the project teams
  • Good knowledge of techniques for planning, monitoring and controlling programmes
  • Good understanding of the procurement process including negotiation with third parties
  • Knowledge of programme and project management methods including MSP and PRINCE2
  • Knowledge of budgeting and resource allocation procedures
  • Sufficient seniority and credibility to advise project teams on their projects in relation to the programme
  • The ability to find ways of solving or pre-empting problems
  • Strong communications skills with the ability to make the complex simple
  • Strong relationship building skills, able to build relationships at all levels internally and within our customers’ organisations
  • Significant work experience in solution in a solutions and services, software or technology company 
  • A very strong bias to action, grounded, willing to "roll-up-sleeves” and ‘get hands dirty’
  • Ability to adapt, work collaboratively and thrive in uncertainty

  • Excellent academic qualifications with a BSc Degree and/or MSc, preferably in Business or a Technical subject
