Summary:

Hitachi America, Ltd. (www.hitachi-america.us) is looking for a Ph.D./Master’s degree holder in Mechanical, Mechatronics, Industrial or related Engineering field to join our R&D team as a researcher to contribute in the area of Smart Manufacturing/Industry 4.0. The Researcher will collaborate with HAL Researchers, Hitachi R&D in Japan and industry partners as well as customers on Smart Manufacturing Digital and Automation solutions. This position will require sound knowledge in production systems, industrial automation & control technologies, and prior experience in solution and software development for industrial projects. The position requires the researcher to work as a team member with good communication and written skills.

Job Duties:

  • The candidate will work in close collaboration with HAL Researchers and Hitachi R&D in Japan.
  • The candidate should be capable of working with industry partners and customers, identifying customers’ needs & challenges, and proposing & conducting solution design / implementation / verification.
  • Ability to design, implement and apply digital and automation solutions with latest technologies in both hardware and software, including but not limited to sensors, Robots, PLC, SCADA, MES.
  • The candidate should be able to leverage Industry 4.0 elements to improve processes and productivity for various manufacturing processes.
  • Ability to conceive proof of concept ideas and then scale them up to production not just on a single line but across different lines and factories.
  • The candidate must have the ability to make strategic plans and execute them. He/she will perform complex process and system analysis with high level of analytical ability.
  • Periodic generation of invention disclosures based on research outcome.
  • Publish technical papers and attend/present at conferences and seminars.

Qualifications

  • Master or higher degree in Mechanical, Mechatronics, Industrial or related field. (Required)
  • Deep understanding in industrial automation and control technologies. (Required)
  • Knowledge of manufacturing system and experience in industrial automation with PLCs, and industrial robots, including ABB, Fanuc, and Universal Robot. (Required)
  • Knowledge of sensors, SCADA, MES required. Hands-on experience with Ignition preferred.
  • Knowledge of Industry 4.0/IIoT Platform, and data handling through OPC UA, MQTT (Preferred)
  • Experience in applying AI and machine learning to factory automation & industrial problem solving. (Preferred)
  • Experience in programming experience language such as Python, and C/C++. (Preferred)
  • Experience of working with database and SQL programming. (Preferred)
  • Experience of presenting / publishing in international conferences or journals is preferred
  • Capability of writing new proposals to sustain research funding is preferred
  • Skills in time and project management is required
  • Must be able to travel locally and internationally up to 25% of the time
