If you're eager to learn, keen to gain hands-on experience across a diverse range of projects, and excited by the prospect of building a long-term career with a company committed to your development, we'd love to hear from you.
Your New Role
As a Junior Human Factors Engineer, you'll support Human Factors activities across our Signalling & Rail Solutions and Vehicles businesses, working alongside experienced specialists on projects that directly impact the future of rail transportation.
From supporting bids and helping secure new work, through to contributing to the design and delivery of major programmes, you'll gain exposure to the full project lifecycle while developing your technical expertise and professional network.
Example projects may include:
- Digital rail and signalling solutions.
- Train modifications and the integration of new onboard equipment.
- Safety and operational training support

This is a role designed to develop your career. You'll receive support from experienced colleagues, opportunities to work with multidisciplinary teams, and encouragement to progress towards professional registration and Chartered Human Factors Practitioner status. Our experienced team will be able to provide mentoring and professional development.
What You'll Be Doing
- Support Human Factors work packages across a variety of rail sector projects.
- Work with internal stakeholders, customers and project teams to understand and capture Human Factors requirements
- Evaluate Human Factors issues and contribute to potential solutions and recommendation.
- Support bid and proposal activities, gaining exposure to business development and work winning processes.
- Collaborate with wider disciplines including safety, training, business change and user experience teams.
About You
We're looking for someone with enthusiasm, curiosity and a genuine passion for Human Factors, ensuring what we design meets end user needs.
You may be at the beginning of your career, but you'll be eager to learn, comfortable working with technical information and excited about applying Human Factors principles to real-world engineering challenges.
You'll likely have:
- A degree in Human Factors, Ergonomics or a related discipline. This includes engineering degrees with Human Factors / user centred design modules
- Membership of the Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors (or willingness to obtain membership).
- A collaborative approach and the ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
- A willingness to travel to customer sites when required and gain experience in operational environments.
- A genuine desire to build a long-term career within Human Factors and the rail sector.
Whilst our Human Factors team predominantly serves the UK business, due to our international footprint there could also be project trips abroad.
Why Join Hitachi Rail?
This is more than just a junior-level opportunity.
You'll be joining a growing team where you'll gain exposure to a wide variety of projects, customers and disciplines while receiving the support needed to develop into a well-rounded Human Factors professional.
In return, we'll provide:
- Structured professional development and mentoring.
- Support towards Human Factors Chartership.
- Opportunities to contribute to bids and business-winning activities.
- Exposure to industry-leading rail technologies and programmes.
