Pang Pong

Think it’s exciting to work for a global company that uses innovation to change the world? What about a company that invents its own fun, too? Meet Pang Pong!

Pang Pong is a hybrid of tennis and table tennis (Ping-Pong). The name comes from the sound the ball makes as it is hit from one side of the court to the other. Players use a soft ball the size of a tennis ball and flat rectangular racquets made of wood. The “net” is a low wooden plank.

The game was invented in 1922 at the Hitachi factory campus in Japan. What started as a lunchtime exercise grew quickly into tournaments within Hitachi plants, between plants, and among citizens in the region. Not widely known outside Japan, the sport is growing in Hitachi facilities in other regions.
