Transformer Application Engineer

The opportunity

At Hitachi Energy, our transformer technologies help customers build more reliable, resilient and sustainable power systems. We are looking for a Transformer Application Engineer based in Japan to connect customer needs with our global transformer portfolio and technical expertise. 

You will act as a trusted technical partner to customers, front-end sales and internal engineering teams. By understanding Japan-specific market requirements, customer specifications and applicable standards, you will identify the right transformer solutions, influence specifications and strengthen technical value propositions throughout the sales cycle. 

The role combines customer engagement, application engineering, market development and cross-functional collaboration. Your primary market responsibility will be Japan. As a member of the broader HUB APMEA Application Engineering team, you will also have opportunities to contribute to customer engagements, technical initiatives and business development activities in other allocated markets across the region. 

This is an opportunity for an experienced transformer professional who enjoys translating complex technical topics into clear customer value, leading through influence and building trusted relationships across cultures and functions. 

How you’ll make an impact

1.You will lead application engineering and business development activities for the transformer portfolio in Japan and other allocated regions, aligned with HUB APMEA priorities and growth plans.
2.You will engage with utilities, industrial customers, EPCs, consultants and front-end sales teams to understand applications, technical requirements and customer pain points.
3.You will review customer specifications and tender requirements, identify technical and commercial risks, and recommend compliant, competitive and value-based transformer solutions.
4.You will influence specifications at an early stage by presenting differentiated technical value, sustainability, digital and lifecycle benefits of the Hitachi Energy portfolio.
5.You will provide technical support during opportunity development, tender clarification, customer negotiations, factory visits, acceptance testing and post-order issue resolution.
6.You will plan and deliver customer transformer trainings, technical seminars, conference contributions and internal knowledge-sharing sessions.
7.You will collaborate with product management, factories, tendering, engineering and R&D teams to address Japan-specific requirements and deploy suitable global solutions, while contributing to selected initiatives and allocated markets across HUB APMEA.
8.You will track the transformer market plan, including market trends, installed-base insights, competitor activity, segment opportunities and customer feedback, and support market-planning activities in other allocated markets when required.
9.You will track agreed activity and outcome indicators, including customer engagements, trainings, specifications influenced, opportunity pipeline and return on marketing investment.

10.You will be responsible for ensure compliance with applicable external and internal regulations, procedures, and guidelines.

Your background

1.Bachelor’s degree in electrical, mechanical or power engineering. A master’s degree or active participation in a recognized technical body is an advantage.

2.Minimum 5 years of relevant transformer-industry experience in design, engineering, R&D, tendering, product management, sales, business development or project execution.

3.Strong technical understanding of power and/or distribution transformers, their applications, customer specifications and the technical-commercial tendering process.

4.Knowledge of applicable Japanese and international requirements for transformers, with the ability to translate standards and customer expectations into solution recommendations.

5.Demonstrated ability to communicate complex engineering topics clearly, develop value propositions and influence decisions without direct authority.

6.Customer-focused and commercially aware, with strong analytical, problem-solving, presentation and stakeholder-management skills.

7.Fluent professional communication in Japanese and English, both written and spoken, with the ability to work effectively across cultures and time zones.

8.Willingness to travel within Japan and to other allocated HUB APMEA markets, based on customer and business needs. Be willing to travel ~ 50%.
